🇰🇵 #NORTHKOREA: The Korean People’s Army (KPA) conducted a ballistic missile test yesterday, launching a Hwasong-11D short-range ballistic missile equipped with a Type 2 cluster warhead. Cluster warheads release multiple smaller explosives across a wide area, allowing a single missile to strike numerous targets simultaneously. North Korea claims the warhead can devastate an area of up to 13 hectares (unlikely). Pyongyang also announced plans to deploy four different types of cluster warheads by the end of 2026. 🇺🇸 #US: Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. This will undoubtedly be turned into a weapon, used to hunt people down on the battlefield or maybe elsewhere. (via Praveen Verma)

🇵🇱 #POLAND: Poland’s constitutional crisis is getting worse. Opposition politicians are now pushing to remove Prime Minister Donald Tusk from power. Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki proposed a vote of no confidence, looking to replace Tusk with a temporary government led by Marek Jurek. Morawiecki has warned that the political confrontation could descend into a civil war. At the same time, Poland’s Supreme Court has called an extraordinary assembly for November 3rd to address threats to the country’s constitutional order and judicial independence. The European Commission has also intervened, backing parliament’s authority to appoint new Constitutional Tribunal judges. Tusk has rejected any compromise, insisting his government will continue its efforts to restore judicial independence. The proposed no-confidence vote is unlikely to succeed, but the confrontation between Poland’s president and government remains unresolved. 📸 Beata Zawrzel (via AP)

🇲🇽 #MEXICO: Cartel gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying schoolchildren in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, on October 22nd. The attackers targeted the driver, who was wounded by gunfire but managed to escape and reach a Mexican military checkpoint. The bus was carrying students aged 12–17. Thankfully none were physically injured, although the whole situation must’ve been very traumatic. The shooting comes amid an ongoing cartel war in Sinaloa, where rival factions are fighting for territorial control.

🏴 #CORSICA: Corsican nationalists have withdrawn from autonomy negotiations with #France following a controversial vote in the French Senate earlier this week (October 26th). The decision came after senators voted to remove recognition of a distinct Corsican community from proposed constitutional reforms that would grant the island greater self-government. Corsican nationalist senator Paulu-Santu Parigi announced the withdrawal, accusing the French government and Senate of undermining years of negotiations. The autonomy process began in 2022, following widespread unrest over the murder of imprisoned Corsican nationalist Yvan Colonna. We were on the ground in Corsica when clashes broke out. The negotiations were intended to establish greater political autonomy for Corsica while keeping the island within France. This new development comes amid renewed activity by the Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC), an underground armed separatist movement responsible for decades of bombings and attacks against French state interests. In August, masked FLNC militants held an armed press conference rejecting the proposed autonomy agreement and warning against continued settlement by outsiders on the island. The collapse of nationalist participation in negotiations raises fresh questions about Corsica’s political future and the possibility of renewed separatist violence. The FLNC has not publicly responded to the latest developments.

🇺🇦 #UKRAINE: Chechen fighters from the Sheikh Mansur Battalion were officially honoured by Ukrainian authorities for their continued role in the war against Russia. On October 17th, Donetsk’s regional administration announced they’d awarded members of the battalion two military distinctions for their service fighting for the region. The Sheikh Mansur Battalion was formed in 2014. Its fighters include Chechen veterans of earlier wars against Moscow, alongside volunteers committed to Chechen independence. For many of these men, the war in Ukraine is a continuation of their own struggle against Russian rule in Chechnya. The battalion remains active alongside Ukrainian forces, more than a decade after its formation.

🇵🇰 #PAKISTAN: Militants from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have raided a Pakistani Army position in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The militants are equipped with American-designed rifles, thermal optics, RPG-7 launchers, and explosive-armed drones. The TTP is an Islamist militant organisation fighting to overthrow the Pakistani government and impose its own interpretation of Sharia law. It is distinct from Afghanistan’s Taliban, but maintains close ties with the movement. The group’s growing access to sophisticated weapons has become a serious problem for Pakistani security forces. UN reporting has documented alleged transfers of American-made rifles and thermal equipment from Afghan Taliban commanders to TTP fighters. A very interesting development, especially considering how much hardware the US left behind when they left Afghanistan.

🇸🇾 #SYRIA / ☀️ #ROJAVA: Female fighters from the majority Kurdish ‘Women’s Protection Units’ (YPJ) are pushing to retain their military identity as negotiations continue over their integration into Syria’s new security forces. Said forces are run by Islamists who are opposed to everything the YPJ stands for. On October 20th, the YPJ confirmed that discussions with Damascus were ongoing, insisting that its fighters remain organised as a distinct women’s military formation rather than being absorbed individually into the Syrian armed forces. The YPJ was established in 2013 and became internationally recognised for its role fighting ISIS, particularly during the battle for Kobanî. The YPJ has proposed joining Syria’s Interior Ministry as a unified special operations force, preserving its command structure and all-female composition. The negotiations form part of wider efforts to integrate Kurdish-led armed groups into the Syrian state following the collapse of Assad’s regime. This is not going smoothly to say the least—the forces of “New Syria” have filmed themselves disrespecting Kurdish rights and attacking Kurdish communities. The YPJ’s future remains uncertain as Damascus seeks to consolidate control over all formerly autonomous Kurdish territories. (📸 @Jake_Hanrahan)

🇭🇹 #HAITI: Armed gangs have ambushed international troops, leaving four Salvadoran soldiers missing. A major military rescue operation is underway. On October 18th, militants attacked an armoured vehicle carrying Salvadoran military personnel in Croix-des-Bouquets, near Port-au-Prince. The attackers used rifles and explosives. Four soldiers escaped the burning vehicle but subsequently disappeared. Likely kidnapped. Rescue helicopters were shot at. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele deploying hundreds of additional special forces personnel to Haiti, threatening further military action unless the missing soldiers were returned alive. The ambush occurred in territory associated with the Chèn Méchan gang, close to areas controlled by the notorious 400 Mawozo organisation. On October 24th, reports emerged that bodies recovered in the area were the missing soldiers. Bukele disputed this. The attack is the first major assault against the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force since it began operations this year. Haiti’s armed gangs now control much of the capital. Around 1.5 million people have been displaced by the violence, while international forces continue struggling to reclaim territory.

🇧🇷 #BRAZIL: Right-wing politician Flávio Bolsonaro has fled Brazil for the United States after losing the presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on October 25th. Bolsonaro, son of the sickly former president Jair Bolsonaro, left the country after defying a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports as part of a money-laundering investigation. He denies any wrongdoing. Brazilian authorities cancelled his passports after he failed to comply. Federal Police say there is no record of him leaving through an official immigration checkpoint. The Trump administration has confirmed it will grant Bolsonaro and his family US visas. His exact whereabouts remain unclear, although a source close to the family says he reached Florida. Bolsonaro has not formally conceded the election. President Lula has condemned his departure.

🇸🇾 #SYRIA: Three Kurdish brothers were shot and beaten by armed men in Hasakah, NE Syria on October 10th. This happened due to the brothers simply displaying a Kurdistan flag on their vehicle. There are reports that they are now in a stable condition. The attack comes amid rising tensions between Kurdish and Arab communities in Rojava and Syria as whole, with pro-government demonstrations demanding greater Syrian government control over the region. The incident has intensified concerns over the security and future of Kurdish communities as Rojava’s dwindling autonomy comes under increasing attack.

🇬🇧 #UK: Three of Britain’s four nuclear-armed Vanguard-class submarines are currently at sea in an unusual deployment. At least one submarine is carrying Trident nuclear missiles on a routine deterrent patrol. The other two are thought to be preparing for operations or conducting sea trials. Britain normally maintains one nuclear submarine on patrol at all times. Having three deployed simultaneously is very unusual. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has declined to comment on the deployments or their purpose.
