A mobile comparison test On the left is the current Discord Android client, and on the right is the new version we’re developing in Rust
We didn't forget about mobile, especially Android. Inspired by React Native, it drives the OS-native view layer through the same Rust codebase as the new desktop app. I think it might be the most responsive app on my phone now?

The new Discord client using less RAM is just part of the story. Clicking around feels instant, I can't go back. Check out the boot time.

We've been early adopters of Rust since 2018 and a lot of our infra, voice tech, and even some of the current client is already Rust, the holy grail was getting the whole client there. That means Electron goes away, and so does React Native, mobile keeps native UI but shares app code with desktop via Rust. We hope to get it into testing with users soon™. (And it's not Tauri, it's GPUI, so good guess everyone.) Alright, back to staring at the WoW Forever login screen.

Beyond honored to announce that I'm the English voice of Princess Zelda in The Ocarina of Time Remake. OoT was my favorite N64 game as a kid and it's still so hard to believe I even get to make this post, so you'll have to forgive me as it's a little hard to find the words to say

Four years ago a few of us at a16z started @speedrun to back founders at the earliest stages. A year ago I left to become one. Today I can share what we’ve been building at LionBio: a nasal spray GLP-1 backed by a $6M pre-seed from SPC.

Over the past few days Discord's CTO has hinted at a big update: a rewrite of the desktop client that moves it away from Electron to a fully native client in Rust.

Cool to see people understanding this update! People who run communities have asked Discord for the option to make servers + channels web-searchable for a long time. Really excited to see what FGC and speedrunning communities do with this.

smelly, this is very good actually, switching from forums to discord has been VERY bad for just googling stuff and this fixes that. and for the privacy concerns, only servers that anyone could already search and join (discoverable/public servers) are included!

This is more limited than the post implies. It only applies to some parts of Discoverable Servers. Private Servers, Community Servers, DMs, group DMs, and private or role-restricted channels in Discoverable Servers are excluded too. Usernames and avatars are not shown next to messages. We made this update because over the years people told us useful info that used to be findable on the web had gotten hard to track down. Admins and members get to decide how their content is shared, or can opt out completely. Starting today, admins can pick which channels take part, or opt out entirely, in Server Settings > Web Presence. If you don’t want your messages shown, turn it off anytime in User Settings > Data & Privacy.

we know that people have been concerned about public information being hard to find when it's on Discord, and we're fixing that by making discoverable servers indexable on the web! super hyped about this
If you've ever searched for a specific speedrun trick, someone has likely already answered it in a channel somewhere, in one of 63,000 Discoverable Servers. We’re updating Discoverable Servers to make those answers easier to find. View article

I’m joining the team at @X to lead Product. I am a huge believer in @SpaceX's mission to extend human consciousness to the stars, so it’s time to make shitposting multiplanetary. X is the best way to find out what’s happening in the world right now and talk about it. The team has been working tirelessly to make X a better place and product for the people who love it, and many have noticed the recent momentum. My goal is to help accelerate that momentum for our community, new users, and businesses globally by continuing to make this product beautiful and useful. We are twenty years in, but it truly feels like X’s next chapter will be our greatest. I look forward to your ideas and feedback; I’m sure the replies will be measured and magnanimous.

Definitely doing stuff extra fast. We started installing the updates as they are downloaded, instead of waiting for all downloads to complete. We also implemented multi-threading. So we used to decompress up to 4 installs simultaneously, each one using its own thread. Now, each decompress has multiple threads assisting as well, making installs extra fast. This was also done on the compression side, where we saved about another 5% in size.
first time ive ever seen discord have two progress bars, that must mean its doing stuff extra fast right
