The electric GLC is about more than one new luxury SUV. It says a lot about where India's premium EV market, and Mercedes-Benz's India strategy, is heading. Mercedes-Benz India unveiled the battery-electric GLC 400 4MATIC at Chakan today, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and global CEO Ola Källenius on stage. With a price-tag of ₹78.5 lakh, it has been extremely aggressively priced and very close to the petrol GLC300 - but the GLC400 4MATIC is slightly larger and boasts far superior performance numbers. I drove it around Stuttgart last month and I have some takeaways from today's event. 1. Speed of localisation is now a competitive weapon The GLC is the fastest any global Mercedes model has reached India as a locally assembled car, just six months after European sales began. For years, India got luxury EVs late and fully imported. Local assembly brings down the import-duty penalty, and Källenius made the intent clear: "We will bring launches into India, and we will strengthen manufacturing in India while designing products for Indian customers." 2. The EQ experiment is over Santosh Iyer was unusually frank: "The earlier difference between the EQ brand and the internal combustion engine did not help our customers understand the products as we would have liked them to have." The EQS, he noted, sat awkwardly between the E-Class and S-Class. New electric cars will share names with the petrol and diesel models. Calling it "GLC" puts the EV inside a name that already has more than 22,000 Indian owners, instead of asking buyers to learn a new one. 3. Demand is not the constraint, supply is "We have over a thousand bookings for the GLC even before we announced the price," Iyer said, adding that both the CLA and the GLC are sold out for months. EVs were already 14 per cent of Mercedes-Benz India's sales in the April–June quarter, and the company expects that share to reach 20–25 per cent next year if supply improves. With demand also strong in Europe, the real contest may be over how many cars each market gets. 4. Charging is the bottleneck The GLC can take up to 330 kW of DC charging. Few public chargers in India come close. Iyer pointed to a quieter problem: owners juggling multiple apps and paying upfront. MB.Charge offers one app to find and reserve chargers, and at many stations owners pay only after charging. Dealers have fast-chargers of 150 kW or more. Even so, the pace of highway charging will shape how quickly luxury buyers move from a second-car EV to a primary one. 5. The geopolitics now matter as much as the product Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Brudermüller called the India-EU Free Trade Agreement "not just about trade but also a political statement." Fadnavis went further and pitched Maharashtra as an export base: "Innovate in Maharashtra and Serve the World." With MBRDI already the company's largest R&D centre outside Germany, India is becoming a place where Mercedes builds and develops cars, not only where it sells them. Iyer summed up the shift neatly. Six years ago, customers asked "Why an electric?" Today they ask "Which electric?" The next question is whether the charging network can keep up with that answer.
