The Ref. 6204 takes us back to the birth of the Rolex Submariner in the 1950s. More than 70 years later, #SothebysGeneva has one of the earliest examples, bearing case number 988'886 and dating to 1954, when the model's identity was still taking shape.

Look closely and the features we now instinctively associate with the Submariner are not yet fully defined. Its design feels lighter, simpler and beautifully restrained.
Alongside it is a Submariner Ref. 16800 retailed by Tiffany & Co. During the second half of the 20th century, Tiffany was among a select group of prestigious retailers permitted to sign the dials of Rolex watches sold through its boutiques, making this example a tangible record of a commercial relationship that has long since disappeared.

Introduced under Peter Baumberger and developed during master watchmaker Derek Pratt's era, the Reference 2 was the manufacture's first wristwatch to feature a perpetual calendar, introducing the observatoire-style hands that would become a signature of the house. Approximately 175 examples are believed to have been produced, with this pink-gold iteration including its original box and paperwork.
The Reference 3 built on its predecessor with a power reserve indicator beneath the moon-phase display at 12 o'clock. Incorporating this complication without increasing the watch's dimensions reportedly required two years of development. Production was extremely limited, with only a small proportion believed to have been cased in platinum, like this No. 075.
