The Surfrider Foundation rejects the Trump Administration’s attack on California’s Coastal Zone Management Program, which gives the state authority to review and object to federal projects that might affect its coast. This is an attempt by the administration to force through new offshore oil drilling, dangerous and disruptive rocket launches, and other industrial developments without a say by Californians. California has a 50-year record of excellent coastal protection and has received high praise from NOAA for decades. Taking away California’s voice on federal projects would threaten public safety and beach access, harm coastal communities and businesses, and eliminate meaningful input from Californians on decisions affecting their coast. This unprecedented action should put other states on guard. Surfrider strongly opposes any attempt to weaken California’s coastal protections, and calls on NOAA to drop this unjustified action. Stay tuned — we will need your voice soon to tell NOAA we oppose this attack. Learn more: surfrider.org/news/californi…

We are nearing the close of this year’s Ocean Friendly Business Month, and what a month it has been! 👏🌊 This is our fourth year celebrating Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) and Hotels (OFH). These businesses are putting their values into practice: eliminating single-use plastic waste and making it easier for patrons to eat, drink, and stay somewhere without trashing it. Chapters and clubs have already hosted 16 events and renewed or added 37 Ocean Friendly Restaurants and 3 Ocean Friendly Hotels. And it’s not too late for you to join! 90% of Coastal States Earn a C or Worse on Emergency Seawall Rules as El Niño Batters the Coast ⚠️🌊 As El Niño-fueled storms trigger waves of emergency permits, Surfrider’s State of the Beach Report finds most states lack the proper policies to keep “temporary” coastal armoring from becoming permanent — and it’s causing America’s beaches to disappear. The State of the Beach Report evaluates thirty coastal and Great Lakes states on their emergency armoring policies. This year, 90% of states received a C grade or lower, and no state earned an A. The report provides clear direction for all states seeking to modernize their regulations to address increasingly hazardous conditions along developed shorelines by working with coastal dynamics rather than against them. The ocean is not our enemy, and the state of our beaches does not have to be a state of emergency. A huge thank you to SIMA (@surf_industry) for their support of this report and our work to protect our ocean and coasts for generations to come. How prepared are your state's coasts for climate change? 🌎 As climate-related emergencies increase around the world, the Surfrider Foundation believes it’s essential to help coastal communities, agencies, and planners manage their coastlines for the future, without doing further harm to our beaches or the public’s ability to enjoy them. Surfrider’s 2026 State of the Beach Report evaluates all coastal and Great Lakes states for their respective laws and rules for coastal armoring under an emergency, and the extent to which they avoid new hard permanent armoring through those policies. A huge thank you to SIMA (@surf_industry) for their support of this report and our work to protect our ocean and coasts for generations to come. Ocean Friendly Hotel Spotlight: Porches Inn in North Adams, Massachusetts 🌲🌊 Porches Inn is a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the Berkshires. While the hotel isn’t directly on the coast, they know that choices made inland, from reducing waste to being mindful of the products and resources they use, can help protect waterways that ultimately flow to the ocean. Their inspiration to become an Ocean Friendly Hotel comes from the idea that the places we protect are the places that make travel meaningful. In addition to following Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Hotel program criteria, Porches Inn is also part of the Hotels for Trees foundation, which lets guests opt out of housekeeping so the hotel can put those resources back into nature. To date, they’ve helped plant over 2,300 trees! Check out the spotlight: hubs.la/Q04Bs4Zv0 #OceanFriendlyHotels #OceanFriendlyHotelSpotlight

Building Coastal Resilience in the Rockaways 🌾🌊 Last week, Surfrider partnered with @RISERockaway for #SurfriderClimateWeek to plant native species and restore coastal dunes at Rockaway Beach in New York. Healthy dunes act as a natural barrier, helping protect the coasts from sea-level rise, erosion, and storm surge like the recent Nor’easter. This dune restoration project is part of a years-long effort led by RISE, with Surfrider’s New York Chapter helping advance restoration to protect the Rockaways’ coastal communities and habitat. Tropical Storm Rachel made landfall in Baja California, Mexico last week, about 90 miles southeast of San Diego, after peaking as a Category 3 hurricane. But for Southern California’s beaches, Rachel was just the latest blow in a string of historic storms in the eastern Pacific, and its impact was amplified by a Kelvin wave that raised sea levels in some areas by over a foot. Since early September, Hurricanes Marie, Polo, and Rachel have hammered Southern California’s coast. In Long Beach, their combined force collapsed a section of the historic boardwalk, red-tagging eight buildings and prompting mandatory evacuations. In Newport Beach, a swell that nearly doubled its predicted size broke through 20-foot berms and sent seawater into the streets. And after a full summer of El Niño-fueled storms and tides, beaches in North County San Diego, San Onofre, San Clemente, and Laguna Beach have been dramatically eroded, along with safe access to them. With a strong El Niño underway, this won’t be the last extreme swell and erosion event of the season. Quick fixes like sandbags and hard armoring can buy a little time, but often at the cost of the beach itself. Coastal communities need long-term resilience planning long before the next storm hits — plans that work with nature to protect the future of our beaches and adapt before conditions become dire. Today on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we acknowledge and honor the cultural heritage and enduring resilience of Native peoples, the original stewards of the lands, coasts, and waterways we all love. One meaningful way to observe this day is to take a moment to learn about the Native people who first dwelled on the land where you currently reside. Respect and recognition for Indigenous peoples doesn't begin or end on a single day. We're grateful to work alongside tribal representatives year-round, and humbled to have the opportunity to learn from their ancestral wisdom and kinship with the natural world. By working together, with open hearts and minds, we can become better guardians of our ocean and coasts for generations to come. #IndigenousPeoplesDay

Hurricane Isaias is set to become the first hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in two years. Gulf Coast, stay safe. In SoCal, T.S. Rachel and El Niño-boosted tides are pounding beaches already battered this season. Our coasts need long-term resilience plans, not more seawalls.
