Power, not talent, is what is holding back Zimbabwe’s data centre industry, says Vijay Kumar Bahl, CEO of Varun Beverages Zimbabwe. His group believes it has a solution. Varun’s parent, RJ Corp, has partnered with India’s INOX to construct a 500 MW solar project. Bahl has invited technology companies to build data centres and offered 20 year solar power agreements backed by government. Others are also pursuing the same model. Econet’s InfraCo plans a 300 hectare industrial park near Robert Mugabe International Airport, anchored by a large data centre and a phased 100 MW solar plant. New regulations allowing private companies to distribute and sell electricity could unlock such arrangements. The opportunity is substantial.
