Today is the #InternationalDayOfClimateAction! 🌍
Climate change requires urgent, science-backed solutions. AGU is leading the charge by turning climate science into global action by:
- Developing ethical principles for climate intervention research
- Mobilizing a network of scientists to advocate for critical environmental policies.
- Transforming our headquarters into Washington D.C.’s first net-zero energy commercial renovation.
Partner with AGU on its multiple Days of Action today and throughout the year: spklr.io/6015EVd1b
Critical disaster preparedness bills have lapsed and require renewal to keep our communities safe. Extreme weather and natural hazards threaten millions of Americans every year, but our monitoring and research of hazards will weaken if Congress doesn’t renew these bills.

On 16 October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suspended the 65th Plenary session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after the session ran over time without reaching a consensus on the report timeline for the 7th Assessment Cycle (AR7) and the 2027 budget.
The U.S. Academic Alliance for the IPCC (USAA-IPCC), a network of U.S. universities and colleges that are registered IPCC observers hosted by AGU, thanks the AR7 authors who volunteer their time to assess the state of climate science. The alliance encourages member governments to keep working toward a timeline and to authorize the budget so the IPCC’s critical work can continue.
COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, offers a chance to build consensus before the plenary reopens. AGU and other USAA-IPCC members will be there with AR7 authors and climate experts to discuss the need for assessments.

Judge grants our request to temporarily halt USDA office closures, including the U.S. Forest Service, saying the agency has “almost certainly been violating” Congressional restrictions on use of funds.
Recognizing the massive disruption it would case to wildfire response, the judge paused sweeping changes to the US Forest Service, including moving its HQ to Utah, closing all 9 regional offices, and 23 research facilities.
AGU joined a coalition of plaintiffs, including the U.S. Forest Service employees union, to file this case against the USDA last month. We will keep fighting for our federal workers and for all the ways they keep us safe.

Wind and gravity can space pebbles as evenly as if someone placed them by hand, on Earth and on Mars.
Scientists call the pattern "disordered hyperuniformity." Pebbles on sandy surfaces usually look randomly scattered, but model simulations in JGR Planets show how gravity and wind can, over time, spontaneously push them into organized arrangements.
Even meter-scale features like these help scientists estimate wind and sand conditions on the surface of Mars.
