‘India is already a major force in clean energy’
India is betting big on renewable energy, with solar power leading the country's clean energy transition.
In an exclusive interview with THE WEEK's Delhi Bureau Chief Namrata Biji Ahuja (@nambiji), Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi (@JoshiPralhad) discusses India's clean energy ambitions, the rapid expansion of solar power, the push for domestic manufacturing and the challenges of ensuring reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.
From the success of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to India's growing presence in the global solar energy market, Joshi outlines the country's progress and priorities.
India ranks third globally in installed solar power capacity and overtook the US in annual solar capacity additions in 2025, becoming the world's second-largest market for new solar installations. These gains, Joshi says, will help India move closer to its target of 500GW of non-fossil-fuel capacity by 2030.
