Don has made his role on the front desk of the Bartlett about putting a daily smile on the faces of his community… for the last 25 years… what possible ‘efficiency’ could be more important than that?
My daughter has been to more protests in her five months in England than I have all my life. I am most moved by the latest, a sit-in-protest at her school — The Bartlett School of Architecture, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Security Guard Don Onyido to his position. Recent changes to @ucl’s security protocol saw the unexpected removal of Onyido who has been The Bartlett’s resident Security Guard for 25 years. They reassigned him some part-time non-descript role somewhere at the University. Onyido has been a constant for Bartlett students, has held the fort, and ‘graduated’ 25 intakes. The students are not having it and have occupied the entrance hall indefinitely; even faculty staff have joined them. Young people are so powerful. When I lose hope in humanity, which is frequent these days, such small but powerful acts led by young people restore my hope. It is young people, not the old generation like mine, who will change the world. We, the old, have failed! I am proud of Mop and her peers.

Round 2 of our PropTech Innovation Fund focused on pilots looking at how communities can be involved in planning design and delivery. Councils involved achieved more meaningful engagement, better informed residents, and active resident participation. localdigital.gov.uk/case-stu…

FML I honestly cannot believe this from @RIBA 🤯 1/ designing buildings that deliver social value - is not a hobby to improve wellbeing 😭- it requires skill, commitment and time which have to be paid for (unless see point 2). 🧵

2/ doing work for free entrenches inequality in our profession (which let’s face it has a bit of an issue) because you can only do it if you can afford not to pay yourself.

3/ it is NOT the responsibility of architects to subsidise a lack of investment in public services, by giving away our services for free. This is not the thinking of a serious profession.

What’s interesting about Labour’s housing proposal is it’s not a radical planning overhaul. It’s a serious proposal to make the existing system work as it should by strengthening it. I have Qs about £ - but - for all the political pontificating, this is really all that’s needed.

Great interview questions here by @Framepublishers to draw out what we’re all about @archio @mellishaward
How do you design housing complementary to its context, including its surrounding community? @archio_ltd, a London-based architecture firm headed by Kyle Buchanan and Mellis Haward, believes it’s by being prepared to let people into the design process. ow.ly/84Kx50PLuqs

UK water companies discharged raw sewage more than 300,000 times in 2022. Tme to design new water partnerships that serve the common good, not private profit. My latest @wef op-ed ow.ly/ZWOw50PLt1n Read @watercommongood Turning the Tide report ow.ly/usqc50PLt1o

I spoke to ⁦@RionWillard⁩ about the power of collaboration in architecture, which just happens to be the subject of the book that was published by ⁦@RIBABooks⁩ earlier this year, co-edited by ⁦@mellishaward⁩ and ⁦@TKyleBuchanan⁩. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcas…

Loved this playful way of explaining the environmental benefits of low traffic neighbourhoods in #Barcelona this weekend - in this case the Superilles or Superblocks programme. Kids had to solve a puzzle to find the code and unlock the box! Two very engaged young learners here.
