TWU Local 100 mourns the passing of Dolores Huerta, a trailblazing labor leader, civil rights champion, and co-founder of the United Farm Workers. She was 96. A tireless fighter for working people, Huerta inspired generations to stand together for dignity, justice, and a stronger labor movement. Her rallying cry, “Sí, se puede!”, will forever remind us of the power of solidarity. Rest in power, Sister Huerta. Your legacy lives on in every fight for workers’ rights.

A packed house in the Bronx! MaBSTOA VP Donald Yates welcomed President John V. Chiarello to a standing-room-only Division II membership meeting, with Gun Hill Depot Rec. Secretary Raul Rivera helping organize the strong member turnout in the absence of Div. II Chair Claude Marshall. Joining them were Division II 1st Vice Chair Tom Browne, 2nd Vice Chair Robin Hines-Allen, 3rd Vice Chair Jose Perez, Rec. Secretary Howie Davis, and Kingsbridge Depot Chair Nicolas Castillo. Division I Chair Sean Battaglia and Administrative VP Alexander Kemp were also in attendance. Yates spoke about the ongoing disrespect members face from the MTA and stressed the importance of standing together as one union to fight back and demand better treatment. President Chiarello delivered important updates on contract negotiations and the ongoing fight to fix Tier 6, highlighting progress made over years of fighting to bring pension benefits closer to Tier 4, while employee contribution rates remain a key issue we're working to change. The President also opened the floor to questions from members, taking the time to hear their concerns and address the issues that matter most to them. Reflecting on the responsibility of leading this union, Chiarello told members: “Everything lies on your shoulders, and I take that dead serious, because I go to bargain for each and every one of you... I know how hard you work, and I know that when I go to the contract I'm fighting for you.” A strong turnout, real conversations, and an engaged membership. That's what makes our union stronger!

TWU Local 100 was out in full force this beautiful Sunday morning at Orchard Beach in the Bronx for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk! Members and officers came together to walk in solidarity and support the fight against breast cancer. Before the walk kicked off, Local 100 Team Captain Tonya Thompson of MaBSTOA’s West Farms Depot welcomed Pres. John V. Chiarello to the stage, where he proudly represented Local 100 as a ‘Bronx Strong Sponsor’ and pledged, “We will support this event today and forever.” Thank you to all our members and officers who came out and helped make this day so special. Together, we walk for hope, for strength, and for everyone fighting this battle.

TWU Local 100 was proud to attend NYC LCLAA’s 20th Anniversary Gala last night, where our own President John V. Chiarello was honored for his dedication and service to the labor movement! Introduced by TA Surface VP Gary Rosario, President Chiarello thanked LCLAA for the recognition and spoke about the challenges unions face today. He touched on Local 100’s ongoing contract fight, our recent battle to save NYC’s horse carriage industry, and the 200 immigrant workers who lost their jobs. He also called out politicians who talk about supporting labor but don't always stand by unions when it matters most. His message was simple: Unions need to stick together, stand up for one another, and "Cuando luchamos, ganamos!" When we fight, we win!

The workers needed @CMMercedesCD46 today not next year, but she chose to stand with Manhattan real estate developers rather than her own constituents. Mercedes Narcisse is a betrayer of working people who couldn’t be trusted this year , next year or any year. Good luck running for Brooklyn Borough President. The 17,000 @transportworker members in Brooklyn will remember your treachery .

As the New York City Council prepares to cast a historic vote Thursday, October 22, on legislation to end the horse-drawn carriage industry, carriage workers, union leaders, and supporters gathered for a 9 a.m. press conference and rally at the Broadway entrance to City Hall. Local 100 Administrative Vice President Alexander Kemp spoke at the rally, along with carriage driver and shop steward Christina Hansen, lawyer Arthur Schwartz, who will file a lawsuit against the city if and when the vote passes, and other carriage drivers. Kemp told the press that this bill is not about Romanch Mahajan, this is not about animal welfare, this is about real estate and serving the wealthy of the city instead of the working class.

TWU Local 100 MTA Bus VP Danny D’Amato, Division Chair Mike Capocci, and fellow officers and members stood in solidarity at Westchester County Court today in support of our brother, Bus Operator Johnny Rodriguez, who was severely assaulted on April 4 while on the job. During today’s hearing, the defense for Thywill Anasu, the man charged in the attack, requested a late filing related to a psychiatric evaluation, which the prosecution accepted. Anasu remains out on bail and is reportedly still working, despite also facing charges in a separate case in the Bronx. The next court appearance is scheduled for December 10. TWU Local 100 continues to stand firmly behind Brother Rodriguez as we follow this case and demand accountability for violence against transit workers.

Today is Back to the Future Day! The faces may have changed, but the fight remains the same. From the generations of TWU Local 100 members who stood together for better wages, benefits, and working conditions to those on the front lines today, our history has always been built on solidarity and the determination to never settle for less than we deserve. As we fight for a fair and decent contract today, we honor those who paved the way and carry that same fighting spirit into the future.

Today, TWU Local 100 stood alongside NYC horse carriage drivers outside Central Park to fight for their livelihoods and the future of a 160-year New York City tradition. For these hardworking New Yorkers, many of them immigrants and small business owners, the proposed ban threatens more than their jobs. It threatens their family businesses, their horses, and everything they've worked to build. TWU Local 100 Administrative VP Alexander Kemp brought up the root of the issue—the founder of NYCLASS is a real estate developer, this is a fight between the monied elite and the working class, and other unions should be paying attention to the fact that the city, with Council Speaker Menin leading the charge, is attempting to end an industry. At the same time, Shop Steward Christina Hanson stood with carriage drivers as they shared emotional accounts of what they stand to lose. As carriage driver Atakan Atkay put it: “We are not asking for special treatment, we’re asking for fairness, dignity, and justice.” Save the horses. Save the jobs. Protect working New Yorkers.
