Today found a very special bird in an Iceland context, Long-tailed Skua. There are only 2-3 pairs and I found this bird by guesswork & a bit of ‘luck’ as the sites are kept secret. Highlight of the trip so far!
Barrows Goldeneyes were common along the beautiful Laxa river by Myvatn Lake today. We are now into the sixth day of warm sunny weather!
On Iceland day two saw my first Harlequin Ducks, this is one I have dreamt about seeing since the late 1970’s when I first read about Iceland in John Gooders Where to Watch Birds in Europe, well worth waiting for!
First day of Iceland adventure & first new bird just five minutes drive from the airport, this fine Drake White-winged Scoter appeared to be in a threesome with a pair of Eiders, who seemed remarkably tolerant of his attentions

As a bit of an experiment, I've put together a custom Google Map showing access, parking and view points for birding at Abberton Reservoir: google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1… . With the Waterthrush / Canvasback duo still around, hope this will help visitors!

This Hobby performed very well for 25 mins in front of the hide, hunting large black flies at Wigborough bay, Abberton Res on late afternoon of 21 April.
While extracting a live Small Quaker from a light fitting today I found this long dead & unfamiliar specimen. Is it Evergestis limbata? In which case it has been hiding in plain sight since last summer. Does anybody know it’s current UK status? @MOTHIDUK @BritishMoths
9 Snow Buntings this afternoon at Stone Point, the Naze, Essex. This male had a red ring inscribed with the letters CP. Anybody any idea how I could find out it’s story? @_BTO none of the other birds were ringed.
I have had a reply from Quentin Dupriez, who has confirmed that ‘my’ bird was ringed at Calais on 09/02/23 and was seen at the same site on 22/02. @grafhamwbirder @vicount_biscuit @essexbirdnews @birderkettle @essexbna
