On This Day — July 21, 1943
While millions of Jews were being systematically murdered in Europe, Hollywood came together for one of the largest public awareness events/protests against the Holocaust at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
The dramatic pageant We Will Never Die, written by Ben Hecht, drew a massive crowd. Stars including Frank Sinatra and Burgess Meredith performed, backed by hundreds of rabbis and cantors. The show, was dedicated to the millions of Jews already dead in Europe.
Yet despite the star power and national tour, Ben Hecht later reflected bitterly that it accomplished little beyond making Jews cry.
In truth, even in 1943 as credible reports of mass murder of Jews on an industrial scale were flooding in, Hollywood, the media, and the Roosevelt administration largely treated the extermination of the Jews as a secondary issue not worthy of specific, targeted action.
The lesson is clear: the reestablishment of Jewish sovereignty in Israel is the only guarantee that never again will Jews depend on the conscience of others for their survival.
Celebrated 250 years to the USA with @DOROTUSA seniors by performing for them Deborah Stein's poignant and powerful Telephone Play ETTA IN AMERICA. Seniors shared memories of July 4th (several got married that day!) their own family stories of coming to America!
Launched Telephone Plays summer season with @waluigirights's A PICTURE WORTH 1,000 WORDS. @DOROTUSA seniors shared stories of their own art making. Moving to hear experiences of blind and visually impaired seniors who paint and knit. Thanks @NYSCArts @artny72 for your support!

As #YomHaShoah draws to a close, we remember artists who created theater in the darkest of times and perished, and those that survived, who used theater as a way to heal from trauma. We celebrate the survivors who created the "Bergen-Belsen Theatre Troupe - Kazet" in the DP camp
A moving reminder of the resilience of Holocaust survivors right after liberation and the important role theater and the arts have to play in healing from trauma. Great Yiddish @Columbia exhibit @columbialib! library.columbia.edu/locatio…
