Kind of insane that we're at a point in time where Democratic Senators are suggesting a guy as a moderate compromise Secretary of Defense as he's actively claiming an election was stolen from him
Sen. Dan Sullivan: "We are witnessing the biggest election cheating scandal in the history of the State of Alaska."

Look, obviously this is a kind of viewpoint a pluralist society must tolerate, and it would not be good for state actors/institutions to denounce it. But as individuals who care about freedom and liberty, we have more latitude. This is obviously bigotry.
I have a million criticisms of Jonathan Greenblatt. His stewardship of the ADL has been a moral disaster. But it's not bigoted for him to want his kids to create Jewish families so long as he doesn't impose his views on anyone else.

Doing a PhD does not, uh, ensure you'll be comfortable financially and among the elite for life. It is a temporary position with absolutely zero guarantees. You might be less angry about this whole thing if you engaged with the reality of it, instead of your ungrounded fantasy.
It’s such an insult to the large swaths of the country who makes less than 50k full time to claim it is an injustice to be paid that much while getting an education that will ensure you are comfortable financially and among the elite for the rest of your life

It varies a lot by department. But for many, the degree is a Hail Mary pass for professoriate employment that, in failure, can hang around your neck like an albatross.

Many applicants don't have a job and little if any savings. The process can be the difference between being housed vs unhoused. Being able to feed themselves and their families. This puts a physical and emotional toll on people. Zero sympathy for employers.
Hiring process is a greater inconvenience for the employer than the employee. You just don't hear much about that, because the employer is either a large company with resources to spare, or a small company composed of competent and non-whiny individuals.

The idea that sexual acts with men is somehow degrading is mysogynistic. It coming from the mouth of a woman does not change that. It reduces women's value down to their purity. Their ability to only practice sex within socially accepted boundaries.

In part because in healthy departments, new graduate students continually help faculty stay up-to-date with research trends. The idea that there's some kind of beneficence at play here is childish.
This isn't "work." This is a free education. Undergraduate students pay a lot of money to have the opportunity to be educated at Harvard. PhD students have the privilege to be educated at no cost to them.

Given the state of the academic job market, grad school is only morally justifiable in 2026 if it’s compensated at a genuine living rate. Much better to shrink cohorts and support fewer students than pretend it’s 1972 and students should just suck it up until they’re handed a faculty job.
"If you don't want a better life for those who came after you, you are frankly an evil person." I loved grad school, and I want it to be financially viable for universities to continue to provide that experience. Forcing them to pay 60k+ stipends does the opposite.

been struck off and on that the Democrats were the party of the beginning of the genocide in Gaza and are the same party today but we're supposed to see their getting more power again as some kind of victory for humanity. it's totally bananas.

I genuinely think police safety should inherently be secondary to civilian safety, and that they shouldnt even be allowed to carry around lethal weapons unless they have specific training and a bunch of experience on the job Cus no civilian should ever die cus a cop "got scared"

Hey yall dont need to be arging with econ and criminology profs about a living wage. Sometimes youre better off simply ignoring folks who uphold the status quo, esp when it comes to the wealth gap. Dont feed their demands for attention.

I have no idea why people bring up the economic value of tuition and such in these conversations. You can’t pay your landlord or your doctor with a tuition voucher. Complete non-sequitur.
I made 15-22k as a phd student at Minnesota during 2008-2013. I think Yale and other Ivies were paying 30-40k. I was fine. Don't forget that you are getting massively subsidized by the university! Economic value of your classes, workshops, supervisor time is likely 100k+/yr.

Crossing a picket line is never morally acceptable.
Any Harvard graduate student who participated in this planned class disruption should be disciplined to the fullest extent possible under Harvard’s policies. The professor tried to move the class and couldn’t. His students were disrupted while trying to complete an in-class exam. Completely unacceptable.

Labor solidarity is more important than anything else going on here. If you want to cross the line, I’m glad that it is miserable.

The idea that PhD student research is not work and is instead free education was a clown take 50 years ago but even more so now with publishing expectations ever increasing. It's so ridiculous that I half believe this guy is trolling but he seems serious, just bizarre.

Regardless, research is work. The reason you're paid to teach is because tuition is a major source of income for universities but there's a reason that if you don't do research that you'll be let go from a program, even if your teaching quality is phenomenal. Research is work.

This PhD stipend conversation is interesting, but everyone talking about their experiences 20+ years ago is acting as if the academic job market also hasn’t changed. It makes sense that students require higher pay now as the odds of landing the fancy academic job are much lower.

All of this debate about harvard PhD student incomes just shows me: 1. How few faculty understand the financial pressures students may face 2. How everyone presumes you have family/partner support 3. How little class solidarity we have across system at large 1/4
