Had the opportunity to present our recent work, The Geometry of Noise, at the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers. Fantastic location surrounded by many friends! Thanks @prof_kamilov for the photo.

Reading posts by foreigners about Brazil, I get the impression that you're not aware of the full extent of the accusations against Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, or of the available evidence of his corruption.
So I'd like to kindly invite you to really get to know Flávio. A thread 🧵🇧🇷

The deforestation of the Amazon surged under Bolsonaro. Now under Lula it has fallen to the lowest on record. Bolsonaro's son, now running for president, threatens to reverse that. trib.al/75BfbU8

What is TMLR doing under a 300% increase in submissions?
- Suspensions of >150 authors
- Publicly naming major violations
- Submission quotas distinguishing slop patterns
- Desk rejections 6% → 53%; focus on clarity
- AI reviews evaluating soundness

For the last 10 years we've been raising funds to bring AI to Africa (@DeepIndaba) and South America (@Khipu_AI). The efforts have been very successful, but this year we are finding it hard to raise money. If you work for an AI company, please share the following with the right team to support us. Thank you!
About KHIPU 2027
What it is: KHIPU AI (khipu.ai) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing AI talent, research, and community across Latin America. Alongside year-round regional initiatives, we host a biennial in-person gathering rotating across the continent, previously in Uruguay (2019, 2023) and Chile (2025).
Next Edition: April 5–9, 2027, in São Paulo, Brazil, hosted at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), one of Latin America's leading research universities.
Watch our 2-minute video: youtube.com/watch?v=Db19zoqu… (hear directly from past speakers, including Nando, and Latin American students on how KHIPU grew from a single gathering into a regional AI movement).
Who Attends & Why Support - Engaging with the region's top talent and lab leaders: We bring together around 500 participants, including leading faculty and lab directors from across Latin America alongside a curated cohort of ~300 graduate students and industry researchers selected from over 1,000 applicants. As the local AI ecosystem grows rapidly, KHIPU offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with these emerging researchers and regional leaders in one place, helping shape research priorities and the safety mindset across Latin America while connecting with talent and perspectives outside Silicon Valley.
100% free attendance & student grants: Attendance is completely free for all selected students, professors, and researchers. Sponsorship funding goes directly toward travel and accommodation grants for students and faculty across Latin America who otherwise could not afford to attend.
Community & Track Record: Past editions have featured speakers such as @Yoshua_Bengio , @JeffDean , @jpineau1 , and @NandoDF (2025 lineup: khipu.ai/khipu2025/speakers-…), and have been supported by the Hopper-Dean Foundation, @GoogleDeepMind , @Apple , @Microsoft , @Meta, @cohere , and @MistralAI . For 2027, @OriolVinyalsML and @sarahookr are already confirmed.

(1/7) I'd like to provide some additional context for the remarks that can be found in this interview.
(2/7) My discomfort with the attention being paid to existential risk---and with the ongoing dominance of the public discussion of such risks by a few so-called thought leaders---is that there's an elephant in the room that is being missed. That elephant is the effect of all of this discussion on young people, and indeed the effect---beginning with social media a decade ago---of information technology on young lives broadly speaking.
(3/7) I recently read an interview by Jill Lepore in which she reports on discussions that she had recently with a group of college students: "They had just three things to say. One, social media completely destroyed their childhoods. Two, AI is destroying their college education and their likely prospects for employment. And three, what the hell are we all doing?" To add a fourth bullet that I've heard in similar discussions: "I'm not going to have children, because the existential risk is just too high."
(4/7) Please contemplate such a statement, those of you who think that it's OK that the public, widely diffused, discussion coming from seemingly authoritative figures is so adamant about existential risk.
(5/7) Let me add that I have little interest in a debate about what "superintelligence" might mean, or whether we're currently seeing the emergence of superintelligence. For what it's worth, I would certainly agree that the solution of extremely challenging math problems (for example) exhibits a very impressive form of intelligence, although I would want to argue that such intelligence is impossible to dissociate from the collective of humans that provided data to the machine learning system (which itself has become a kind of collective).
(6/7) Such philosophical debates are entertaining and even important, but when they then head in the direction of "when such superintelligence emerges, there's a good chance that it will want to kill all humans", I say "science fiction". Again, I don't think that it's bad to consider such thoughts, but I strongly believe that it's bad for society, and especially young people, for such thoughts, unaccompanied by any serious real-world analysis, to become a dominant form of discourse of the era.
(7/7) We are damaging human lives, and the consequences of that damage will no doubt be a major theme of the next several decades.

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers.
He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.
TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity
Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission?

This is great work and as part of the community I appreciate it (and the transparency).

Happy to announce that our work, "Generative Manifold Distillation: Aligning Restoration Trajectories with Natural Image Prior," has been accepted to ECCV 2026! 🚀
We propose GMD, a framework that reframes domain adaptation in image restoration as geometric manifold alignment—distilling powerful generative foundation priors using only unpaired low-quality inputs.
I won’t be able to attend in person, but my co-author @arpitbansal297 will be there presenting our poster. Please stop by to say hi and check out the work!
Also, a huge thank you to my collaborators @2ptmvd @docmilanfar Mojtaba Sahraee Ardakan @KangfuM @arpitbansal297 @chenyangqi1.
