In 2-4 years, AI agents may cause Great Depression-level job losses
How? 1 in 5 white collar workers have VERY simple jobs, and shoggoths could quickly replace them:
STEP 1: Companies install keyloggers etc on employees’ computers
STEP 2: AI watches and learns
STEP 3: AI replaces human (they can use computers now, remember. They can do the clicking and typing.)
"But what about the edge cases" you say??
For any given job, maybe AI can’t do 100% of tasks, but it can do 80%, and that means companies could fire 8 in 10 workers.
Normally, technology takes decades to diffuse through the economy because it takes a long time to redesign supply chains, but that won’t be necessary here - just AI agents learning by watching employees’ screens.
We could see a resurgence of organized labor in response.
Maybe we’ll find new work for them, but maybe we won’t? Because unlike every other economic revolution, all the other jobs they could do could also be simple enough for AI agents to do.
The AIs, remember, continue to get exponentially smarter.
Horses DID get replaced by cars. And humans can get replaced by AIs.
