FES published this map on 19 May 2026. Ankara’s online defenders should explain its provenance before turning it into a Netanyahu conspiracy and urging Somalis to attack Ankara’s political rivals. Somalis should demand an account of their resources before taking political direction from the Turkish interests profiting from them. Publish the agreements, identify the beneficiaries (HSM & Damuljadiid) and account for the revenues. Our wealth and political choices belong to us.👇🏾 asia.fes.de/news/geopolitica…

The increasing trolls, accounts, and bots promoting Turkish interests trying to discredit HSM’s political rivals by branding them as UAE proxies. Yet the UAE reports $45.2 billion in bilateral non-oil trade with Türkiye in 2025. Ankara preserves its partnerships while Somalis are encouraged to turn against one another. The question is whose interests this Turkish campaign serves. Defending HSM helps protect the agreements he has signed with the Turkish government and the access they grant to Somalia’s resources. That gives Ankara a material stake in his political survival. Claims of solidarity deserve scrutiny when criticism of a president becomes hostility towards Somalia itself. Somalia’s interests extend beyond one presidency. Its resources belong to its people. Every agreement should withstand public scrutiny, whoever holds political office in Villa Somalia.

Two people suspected of being Turkish nationals burn Somalia’s flag, as Ankara maintains close ties with Somalia’s government, whose term has expired, and significant political influence in the country’s south and centre. The Villa Somalia’s election announcement reads as a political stunt designed to divert attention from reports that forces aligned with Laftagareen have taken Buurhakaba. The timing raises an obvious question. Is this an electoral timetable or an attempt to regain control of the political narrative? The deeper issue is the dismantling of Somalia’s political settlement. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Damuljadiid and JSP are seeking to impose the rules under which they intend to retain power. The announcement schedules parliamentary elections for April 2027 and a presidential election for May 2027, explicitly treating the presidential term as five years. Somalia’s constitution embodies a political negotiation among its political communities over how power is shared and exercised. Leaders who rewrite the constitution, prolong their time in office and dictate election rules make their opponents compete on terms designed to keep them in power. Publishing election dates compounds the problem. An election earns public confidence through rules the parties accept, institutions they trust and security forces that serve the country. Those conditions must be secured for the vote to offer a credible route to a transfer of power. Somalia’s future turns on who has the authority to set the rules, whose consent sustains them and who answers for the consequences. An electoral calendar cannot repair a political bargain that those in power have broken.👇🏾
#BREAKING: Somalia’s disputed electoral commission has unilaterally announced parliamentary elections for April 15, 2027, and a presidential vote for May 15, despite the absence of an agreement with Puntland, Jubaland and opposition leaders. The announcement marks a major setback for internationally backed negotiations aimed at securing a joint electoral framework, raising the prospect of rival political processes and competing claims of legitimacy. The move also raises fears of renewed violence in Mogadishu, where government forces and opposition-linked positions clashed on June 3. The unresolved electoral dispute now threatens to deepen an already fragile political standoff.

The HSM regime represented by several former ICU fighters including Mukhtar Robow, Al Shabaab’s former deputy leader, now sanctions Southwest political figures over alleged terrorist financing. It owes the public credible evidence and consistent standards. Turning AML/CFT powers into weapons against political rivals would discredit the institutions meant to protect the financial system. International financial institutions should demand an independent review of these designations before acting on them. If Somalia’s FRC has helped turn political disputes into terrorism financing allegations, its international partners should suspend cooperation pending credible safeguards. Financial intelligence requires evidence, due process and independence from political interference. 👇🏾 #AML/CFT
BREAKING: Somalia’s federal government has issued sanctions imposing financial and travel restrictions on former South West State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen, former Custodial Corps chief Mahad Abdirahman "Shub" and several administration members and relatives over alleged links to Al-Shabaab. The National Anti-Money Laundering & Counter-Terrorism Financing Committee placed 10 individuals on its targeted financial sanctions list, ordering all financial institutions to immediately freeze their assets, cease dealings, and report transactions to the Financial Reporting Center (FRC). The ousted South West leader, who is currently based in Nairobi, has not yet responded to the government's decision.

Heshiiskii Soomaaliya iyo Mustaqbalka Puntland WQ @4rukun Marka hore waxaan rabaa inaan cadeeyo waxa aan hore u difaacayey wuxuu ahaa heshiiskii siyaasadeed ee Soomaalida mideeyey, kuna qeexnaa Dastuurkii Ku Meelgaarka ahaa ee 2012. Xilalkii aan soo qabtay dhammaantood waxay ku dhisnaayeen heshiiskaas. Difaaciisu wuxuu ahaa difaaca awood qaybsiga, wada oggolaanshaha iyo xaqa bulsho kasta u leedahay inay talada dalka qayb ka noqoto. Aragtidayda, wax ka beddelkii dastuurka ee Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud iyo Damuljadiid ay wadeen 2024 wuxuu burburiyey saldhiggii heshiiskaas. Heshiis ay bulshooyin ku wada-galeen dowladnimo waxaa wax looga beddeli karaa wada oggolaanshahooda. Kooxda Muqdisho oo awoodda haysa marka ay kaligood beddelaan, waxaa dhaawacmaya kalsoonidii lagu wada joogay. Siyaasiyiin badan oo Muqdisho jooga waxaan ka sugayey inay difaacaan heshiiskaas iyo dastuurka 2012. Sida muuqata waxay ku mashquulsanyihiin doorasho. Hadalkooda iyo ficilkooda ayaan ku qiimeynayaa. Qofka maanta ku doodaya midnimada Soomaaliya waxaa laga rabaa inuu sharaxo sida uu u ilaalinayo xuquuqda, oggolaanshaha iyo saamiga bulshooyinka ay midnimadaasi ka dhexayso. Dadka ka falceliyey qormadayda qaarkood waxay hore uga soo horjeedeen federaalka; qaar kalena waxay taageeraan ama u shaqeeyaan maamulka Xasan Sheekh. Sidaas darteed, mowqifkoodu iguma cusba. Waxa aan ka sugayaa dood ka jawaabaysa arrimaha aan soo bandhigay waa siyaasiyiinta ka madax banaan Xasan Sheekh. Qofka ka soo horjeeda gunaanadkayga ha caddeeyo waxa uu xal u arko iyo sida xalkaasi u ilaalinayo danaha iyo rabitaanka reer Puntland. Puntland waxaa la dhisay 1998, kaddib burburkii dowladdii dhexe iyo dhibaatooyinkii dagaallada sokeeye. Dadkeedu waxay ku heshiiyeen inay nabaddooda ilaashadaan, maamul dhistaan, noloshoodana dib u bilaabaan. Waayo-aragnimadaasi waxay ina xusuusinaysaa in dowladnimadu ku bilaabato bulsho isku tashata oo isla qaadata masuuliyadda mustaqbalkeeda. Waxaan ku doodayaa in Puntland ay awooddeeda, dhaqaalaheeda iyo dadaalkeeda ku jeediso dhismaha hay’ado dadkeeda u adeega. Maxkamaduhu ha ilaaliyaan xuquuqda. Ciidamadu ha sugaan amniga oo ha ku shaqeeyaan sharciga. Dakhliga dadweynaha ha maalgeliyo waxbarashada, caafimaadka iyo adeegyada aasaasiga ah. Go’aan Muqdisho ka soo baxa waa inuusan wax saameyn ah ku yeelan maxkamadda Gaalkacyo oo shaqaynaysa, adeegyada waxbarashada ee Boosaaso, adeegyada caafimaad ee Qardho iyo ardayda Badhan oo waxbarashadooda sii wadata. Haddii reer Puntland, iyagoo xog-ogaal ah oo si ballaaran u wada-oggol, doortaan inay si buuxda uga go’aan Muqdisho, doorashadaas waxay u baahan tahay diyaargarow dhab ah. Waa in la adkeeyaa heshiiska gudaha, la dhisaa awoodda maamulka iyo difaaca, lana diyaariyaa xiriir-dibadeed oo xoojiya ganacsiga, nabadda iyo danaha dadka. Isla xisaabtankuna wuxuu ka bilaabmaa gudaha Puntland. Hoggaankeeda waxaa saaran masuuliyadda ilaalinta hantida dadweynaha, caddaaladda iyo adeegyada. Kalsoonida shacabka waxaa lagu kasbadaa shaqo ay natiijadeeda arkaan. Soomaalinimadu waxay qiimo ku leedahay sida aan u ilaalinno nafta, sharafta iyo xuquuqda qofka Soomaaliyeed. Qofkii Soomaaliya wax u qabanaya ha ka bilaabo dadka uu masuuliyadda u sheegto. Halkaas ha ka dhiso caddaalad, amni iyo nolol wanaagsan. DHAMMAAD

If Puntland separates with broad public consent, the FGS would face a profound challenge to its claim to represent a shared Somalia’s political settlement. States recognising Mogadishu will reassess that claim against the consent and authority it actually commands internally. I know of several countries prepared to withdraw recognition from the FGS.

Too many politicians in Mogadishu and supporters of Damuljadiid mistake titles for responsibility, have no sense of duty, and take appearances for achievement. Anyone serious about Somali unity should begin where they are and their respective leaders. Focus the debate on what matters and what saves Somali lives. If Al Shabaab rules the people your politician claims to represent, what does that public office mean to those communities? Start by making government useful in their lives. Protect them, treat them fairly and ensure they can get justice and basic services without needing a powerful connection. Spare us the lectures on Somalinimo while your political class invests pilfered public funds in the neighbouring countries. The people in your communities deserve better energy and the services that stolen money should have paid for.

“As you start to walk on the way, the way appears.”
— Attributed to Jalaluddin Rumi Puntland’s politicians must turn their attention home. Strengthen the courts, recruit on merit, build the economy and make public services work in Puntland. Each step will expand what Puntland can achieve for itself. The path will become clearer through the worthwhile work.

Puntland’s coming political earthquake is a widening gap between citizens building their future at home and leaders whose politics still revolve around Mogadishu. My latest article explains why this matters. 1/8 theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/opi…

The earthquake concerns leadership. Authority will increasingly depend on what leaders deliver in Puntland. Those still organising politics around Mogadishu risk being overtaken by citizens building their future elsewhere. 8/8 Read the EASTAFRICAN articles: theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/opi…

An issue beyond the article is fiscal coercion. When Villa Somalia blocks Puntland’s access to donor funds, World Bank programmes and budget support, aid becomes a tool of political control. Donors must ensure their funds reach communities free from political interference.
