Over the past few weeks, the UN’s @UPEACE has faced a leadership crisis, culminating in the resignation of longtime rector Francisco Rojas Aravena.
@newhumanitarian spoke to current and former students and faculty members as the crisis unfolded.

“Lucy did not commit any crimes,” a nurse who had worked on the unit for thirty-six years replied. “If there had been CCTV the footage would have proved her innocence.”

The UK government was aware for years of his history of self-harm and suicide attempts before moving him to Eswatini, where his arrival was publicly condemned by a local politician.

Facing a rise in anti-LGBTQ sentiment in Africa, @OxfaminAfrica told staff not to proactively advocate for LGBTQ rights – even withholding funding from a local partner until they altered their website. They've since retracted the guidelines. thenewhumanitarian.org/news/…

A cyberattack on WFP exposed data from 600,000 households in #Gaza.
This should worry us.
Humanitarian systems now dependent on #data for access to assistance, visibility, & protection.
The same data can also serve surveillance/military purposes.

Pretty jaw-dropping investigation by @newhumanitarian on Adeso & Degan Ali's work "Whenever you hear Degan speak, she speaks about decolonising, ”a current Adeso staffer told TNH . “But when you come within her organisation, it’s the direct opposite.”
Former Adeso staff described a culture of fear and bullying at odds with the organisation’s external messaging on decolonisation.
At least six board members resigned in 2024.

The most damning condemnations of Israel's war have always come from the Israeli soldiers who actually fought it:

"I want to have a pleasant positive conversation"
A car crash interview for Katie Porter. But also a reminder of why our media is broken. Politicians got use to the idea that interviews should be "pleasant positive conversations". NO! They should be challenging & discomforting.

Suzanna Tkalec, the UN’s Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Occupied Palestine, allowed Israeli authorities to weaponise food at sheer starvation.
She then instead bargained over bringing food to stray dogs more than starved humans in Gaza.

Here in #Gaza, 2 months since the ceasefire collapsed, we're doing everything possible to help survivors - amid shelling, attacks, and carnage.
The blockade on aid is deadly. Lift it NOW!
#StopNOW weaponizing #HumanitarianAid.

UN colleagues are denouncing Suzanna Tkalec, the UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the oPt, for helping Israel displace residents of Gaza City. It was previously reported that Israel was seeking UN assistance to establish camps in the south and facilitate expulsions.
Ynet reports that Israel is seeking to convince UNSG @antonioguterres to have the UN collaborate with Israel in establishing a concentration camp in Khan Younis for the 1 million Palestinians Israel intends to expel from Gaza City and Jabalia to southern Gaza.

Breaking: As @BashaReport privately forecast to its clients yesterday, the Houthis have begun raiding @UN offices in Yemen and detained staffers, including but not limited to @WFPYemen and @UNICEF_Yemen.
Our alert yesterday warned: “The Houthis will launch a major internal security crackdown, primarily targeting individuals linked to the Saleh family, the General People’s Congress, and key figures in the security, military, and intelligence sectors who still hold influence from the Saleh and Hadi eras. The crackdown will also extend to staff of INGOs, NGOs, and foreign embassies in Sana’a, as well as banks, money transfer companies, and currency exchange shops.”
