Israele continua poi i raid in Siria.

Sounds like the fresh and original idea of crossing some more of Russia’s red lines and seeing what happens doesn’t fly with the new Trump administration. Wonder why.

Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Merezhko told FT that the far right will dub any talks with the Russians capitulation and called them “a threat to democracy”. A senior Azov movement figure, Maksym Zhorin, says that yes indeed they will and calls the far right “the foundation of country’s security”. Zhorin is the deputy commander of the 3rd Detached Assault Brigade, an elite unit under the political control of the far right Azov movement. For Azov movement and multinational securocratic interests behind it, the war is a lucrative business - an enormous pie they are sharing with the Russian siloviki mafia. They are not going to give it up easily. One can engage in cheap and silly talk about “only 2% of Ukrainians supporting the far right” but they have all the military and political capability to upset any peace and they care little about 98% of Ukrainians. They succeeded in derailing the 2019 Paris agreements between Putin and Zelensky. Together with other far right movements, they staged a menacing campaign to prevent Zelensky from reaching a last-minute deal on the eve of the Russian full-out invasion in 2022. They are a major political and military force that should be reckoned with when peace talks start in earnest. If peace is finally reached, these professional soldiers and especially drone operators will fill up the ranks of organised crime in Europe and beyond.

Head of Odessa’s military administration Oleh Kiper says that UNESCO-listed Pushkin monument should be removed. The city’s elected authorities are against it, but the military governor appointed by the president will likely prevail as he did on previous occasions. This is how Ukraine works these days. Tellingly, Radio Liberty’s Skhemy project established in 2023 that Kiper’s wife was still Russian citizen and tax payer owning property in Russia. A recent investigation by Hromadske alleged that Kiper now controls Ukraine’s agricultural exports with the help of his own executive orders establishing emergency customs rules. The same kind of orders that he is using to remove Pushkin who lived and worked in Odessa. A story emblematic of financial and political interests behind ethnonationalist insanity and conflict-mongering.

Vice president of EU’s liberal party explains liberalism
I am not surprised that Ilya Yashin is not calling for russia to pull the troops, but for Ukraine and russia to "negotiate". This is the best showcase of what we have been telling you all along: there are no "good russians".

I posted yesterday about 5-ARD, a disorder (or difference) of sex development. I don't think anything I've posted here has ever received more attention (millions of views, over 10K likes, and rising, media inquiries, which I've turned down). First: why didn't I mention that I have a book for anyone interested in sex differences, testosterone, DSDs, etc.? Did not occur to me. Dumb, I know. But it's a great book! Go buy it! It's called T: the Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us. a.co/d/0yhZsGB Second: I know I could have written more concisely, but I wanted to get relevant info out there on this particular DSD, in a way that is interesting (to me) and accurate. I love all the detailed stuff, and like 10 other people do too, so that's what I included. Third: I don't know what condition any boxers who probably shouldn't be competing in the female category have. I provided info on one condition that fits the info I do have (athletes with XY chromosomes, an apparent significant advantage in strength and power, not identifying as transgender, competing in the female category), and which is relatively common in these rare situations. And fourth. Some people were confused about various aspects of this DSD, which is understandable, since my tweet about it was too long for most people to read carefully (or even finish), and I used language and concepts that non-scientists might not be used to. But if you're interested, here's what I hope is some clarifying info. Yes it's detailed! Males with 5-ARD do not have a uterus or other female internal structures, but they do have what looks like a vagina, so are often sexed as females. However they are males with normal testes, which produce typical male hormones. Those hormones, among other things, prevent the development of female internal reproductive structures (like the uterus and cervix). In embryonic development, we all start out with two sets of primordial duct systems, one set that will develop into the male internal reproductive stuff (the Wolffian ducts, which become the epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicles), and another that develops into the female internal stuff (the Müllerian ducts, which become the upper part of the vagina, cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes, pic at the end). In males, fetal testes don't only produce testosterone! They also make Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), which is crucial for getting rid of the Mullerian ducts, and thus, ensuring that the eventual uterus, etc. don't develop. If there's no testes and no AMH, that female internal stuff will develop. Males need high levels of T for male-typical development of all the male reproductive structures. Without T production and action, the external (penis and scrotum) and internal (described above) genitalia won't develop. But as I wrote in my monster tweet yesterday, T alone isn't enough for development of the penis and scrotum (and prostate): for that, T must be converted into DHT (a more potent androgen, production pathway below), and people with 5-ARD don't make the necessary enzyme to carry out that conversion. So they end up with what appears to be a vagina. FYI, some males inherit a genetic mutation that means they can't produce AMH. They are typical males, but have a nonfunctional uterus and fallopian tubes inside their abdomen. The condition often not discovered until adulthood (it's called Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome). AMH is an important hormone for males, but hardly anyone even knows it exists. Also, the testes generally don't descend into the scrotum before birth (as usual) without DHT, but they often do at puberty when testosterone levels reach high concentrations. So males with 5-ARD may be "sexed" as female, due to the female-appearing external genitalia. But brain and the rest of the body are typically male. Most people with the condition will "transition" to living as a male once they realize they are male, and this often happens at puberty, when the testes descend and the body develops in a typically masculine way.

There are things to criticise Chulpan Khamatova for but she raised her voice against the full-out invasion from day one. It’s not like Ukraine is not embracing any anti-Putin Russians, but it seems squarely focused on embracing those with the dodgiest past. Ukraine gave citizenship to Aleksandr Nevzorov who lionised Riga OMON’s criminal battle against Baltic independence in 1991. Sergey “Malyuta” Korotkikh who created Russia’s largest neo-nazi platform also has Ukrainian passport today. Dubbed “Kremlin’s provocateur” by Navalny’s movement, former Duma deputy Ilya Ponomaryov is welcome in Ukraine with open arms. Russian nationals who circulated a translation of Christchurch shooter’s manifesto hours after it happened did it out of Ukraine, while serving in Ukraine’s armed forces. Russian national Sergey Lyovkin ran world’s largest NSBM (national-socialist black metal) festival in Kyiv after moving to Ukraine and joining Azov. Unlike all of these unsavoury personalities, Khamatova is one of the best known Russian actors who did engage with the Kremlin when she ran a charity helping children in bad medical condition and she openly regrets it. But unlike president Zelensky, she didn’t co-host prime New Year’s show on Russia’s Channel One. She is famous at home and internationally. Many people would remember her from the German film Goodbye Lenin. When you don’t need any genuine and reputable allies on the other side of the frontline, you either want to lose the war or you are interested in prolonging it for as long as possible. Or else, you are prone to irrational behavior and active self-harm.

Yes, all the SBU-linked groups will be up in arms - like they were in January 2022 when they feared Zelensky would succumb to Putin’s blackmail and start implementing Minsk. Levus-led Resistance to Capitulation and all that. A threat of a coup. Zelensky is perpetually trapped between these two blackmails, only the second one entails much greater personal risks. SBU-linked far right thugs were behind most, if not all, post-Maidan assassinations, as per police investigations. None of the perpetrators has been punished. Court cases would fizzle out after years of deliberations.
Zelensky would face far-right blowback in case of peace deal or prosecution for what he did during war. "Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko said that in the coming months, President Volodymyr Zelensky will have to make difficult decisions, which in any case could lead to political suicide. And in the case of a territorial compromise with Russia, a referendum will have to be launched, the mayor believes." Klitschko in an interview with Corriere della Sera: "The coming months will be very difficult for Volodymyr Zelenskyi. Will he have to continue the war with new deaths and destruction, or consider the possibility of a territorial compromise with Putin? And if so, what pressure will there be from America in the event of Trump's victory? And how to explain to the country that it is necessary to give up pieces of our territory that cost the lives of thousands of our fighting heroes? Whatever step he takes, our president risks political suicide. Let's be honest, we have to win the war, but the situation is getting more and more difficult, it depends on the help coming from the allies, it would be a nightmare if we have to fight for another two years... Zelensky will probably have to resort to a referendum, I do not think that he will be able to reach such painful and important agreements on his own, without popular legitimation." pravda.com.ua/news/2024/07/2…

The countries hitherto admitted into NATO had less significance to Russia than Ukraine, and Russia’s relationship with the West has deteriorated over time. Deterrence doesn’t magically work by making a promise on paper only. That’s League of Nations thinking.
Why didn’t Russia attack Sweden and Finland after they signaled their interest in joining NATO and then were admitted? Why didn’t Putin attack Estonia in 2002 or 20024? Russia/USSR has NEVER attacked a NATO member. #Inconvenientfacts.

The theatrics of crossing Russian red lines: The “belligerent” Europeans and the ever so “risk-averse” Americans. But at the end of the day, they will be convinced, too. After a lot of “hesitation”. At that point, Storm Shadow missiles will start hitting targets inside Russia and the next move will be Kremlin’s. The spectrum of options is wide. Russian milblogger community is particularly trigger-happy about NATO’s reconnaissance planes over the Black Sea which they believe play a role in attacks on Crimea. It may also give Putin a pretext for launching another mobilisation. What happened in 2014 and 2022 should inform us about things that occur when the critical mass of crossed red lines is reached. The unthinkable. Seeing Ukraine restore its territorial integrity would be great - I’d love to see that before the end of my life. But is it feasible now and at what cost? People like Czech president Pavel believe it’s not possible. But if this latest escalation is all about pressuring Putin into agreeing to a better deal, then again - the 12 months of brinkmanship between Feb 2021 and Feb 2022, with the aim of getting “a better Minsk”, should inform us about the likelihood of achieving that. Rather than something truly horrible that will touch upon everyone, at least in Europe.

The worst real problem for Georgian opposition is that they do not have an analogue of Right Sector in Ukraine 2014: those who opposed Russia’s violence with real means. Without the Right Sector and other fighters, Maidan would have been erased like Belarusian protests in 2020.
