Since January 1, 2025, covering the face in public is illegal across the country — violators face an on-the-spot fine of 100
CHF, rising up to 1,000 CHF if refused.
In Zurich, a woman who appealed her fine claiming "Islamophobia" saw it increased tenfold to 1,000 CHF.
The ban was approved by 51.2% of Swiss voters in a 2021 referendum.
