Announcement: Official Launch of YANK Chapters in Tharaka Nithi and Embu Counties. This strategic expansion marks a significant milestone in our mission to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation and other forms of violence against children and girls through youth-led advocacy, community mobilization, and capacity building . The new chapters will provide strong platforms for young people to champion local action, support girls’ education, and amplify survivor voices. Why These Counties Matter According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022, Kenya has made commendable progress in reducing FGM/C prevalence nationally to 15% (down from 21% in 2014). In Tharaka Nithi and Embu pockets of the practice persist, particularly in certain communities forming part of 22 high prevalent counties in Kenya. The establishment of these YANK chapters comes at a critical time to accelerate momentum, sustain the gains, and ensure no girl is left behind. Key Objectives of the New Chapters: • Mobilize and equip young people as frontline champions against FGM and harmful practices. • Foster intergenerational dialogue and community engagement. • Strengthen county-level policy implementation and accountability. • Create safe spaces for survivor support, leadership development, and peer-to-peer education. The official launch events will convene youth leaders, community elders, government officials, civil society partners, and other key stakeholders to demonstrate collective commitment to ending FGM and advancing girls’ rights in Tharaka Nithi and Embu. We commend the dedication of the @AFGMBoard to establish these chapters. This expansion strengthens our collective voice and brings us closer to a Kenya free from FGM and all forms of gender-based violence. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are YANK.

Madam @lolojuberna , the CEO of @AFGMBoard -FGM Board of Kenya shared her personal story. “Barely 13, I was subjected to FGM by a retired nurse. In my community, it was considered normal, my grandmother believed every girl had to go through it. That night before, we watched the nurse boil the tools, unlike today, back then medical tools were reused after boiling. My sister became anaemic from complications. The trauma stayed with us.” This is why @FGMresearch work with healthcare workers is so critical. They’ve developed a curriculum to help healthcare providers and community health promoters prevent FGM and respond with care and empathy, something I wish had existed back then. As a government, we’ve made progress, but we need your support. @UNFPAKen , @FCDOGovUK , and development partners, it’s time to roll out this curriculum widely. Together, we can change the story for the next generation. #EndFGM #FGMIsViolence #SurvivorVoices #TheGirlGen

THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CHILD PROTECTION IN AFRICA (ICCP 2025. This morning, I had the honour of delivering my opening remarks at the Third International Conference on Child Protection in Africa (ICCP 2025). Under the theme “Child Protection and Climate Change,” I highlighted the urgent need for leaders, partners and communities, to recognise that climate change is not only an environmental issue it is also a child rights challenge that affects children’s health, safety, education and overall well-being. I extend my warmest welcome to all our guests from across Africa and beyond — from government, academia, development agencies, civil society and especially the children who will join us through the conference. Let ICCP 2025 be a platform for bold action and collaboration.

We were greatly honoured to have Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, @MamaRachelRuto as our Chief Guest. The Ministry remains steadfast in our commitment to delivering on the Government of Kenya’s agenda for children. We recognize that investing in children is not only a moral duty but a smart development strategy. We are working to strengthen policies, improve coordination and ensure that every child in Kenya grows up in a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment. The Government of Kenya, under the leadership of H.E. President @WilliamsRuto has made significant progress in institutionalizing children’s rights through policy and legislation. The Children Act Cap 141, which aligns our legal framework with international standards is a landmark achievement. The supporting regulations are in their final stages and will soon be gazetted. Additionally, the Children Policy (2010) is undergoing a comprehensive review following robust public participation, and will soon be presented to Cabinet for approval.

We can’t talk about Kenya’s future without talking to its youth. Today, too many young Kenyans are navigating: 1. High unemployment and underemployment 2. Exclusion from policy and decision-making spaces 3. Unequal access to quality education, digital tools, and capital 4. The harsh realities of climate change and environmental degradation 5. A widening gap in meaningful civic and economic participation But, we can all change things. In the lead-up to International Youth Day (IYD) 2025, UNDP Kenya is creating a platform to change the narrative — and we want your voice in it. We’re calling on young people, women, researchers, practitioners, leaders, and community leaders to contribute to a special compendium on: “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend Through Youth Engagement in Kenya" This is your chance to document real stories, share impactful ideas, and propose bold, evidence-based solutions to the challenges our generation faces — from governance and climate action to digital innovation and social justice and more. 📝 Submit your paper: 🔗 shorturl.at/M51WK #YouthVoices #IYD2025 #Kenya #YouthInAction #DemographicDividend #WeAreTheNow #YouthLeadership
