We’ve had the pleasure of getting to know this wonderful young man, Ethan from VA & would like to help him out by asking you if there’s a job for him closer to his family.
He’s a very good rider, has picked up a lot of cattle working skills and has an excellent work ethic.

What’s something your local farm coop could do (other than lower prices, that’s a given) to be more valuable to your farm operation?

Another field corner fenced off making it ideal for some native tree planting 💪🏻 #farmlandbiodiversity – at Kerry, Ireland

The key for our operation is feeding first thing in the morning, keeping deep snow plowed, providing fresh bedding in new spots as often as necessary & running health checks daily. We calve for three cycles so we’re still calving in March and it doesn’t get any easier. #ranchlife

Well maintained cattle (sufficiently fed, ample access to fresh water and a proven mineral and vaccine program in a well maintained environment) thrive and raise frisky resilient calves any month of the year.

Our operation has a very specific schedule dictated largely by our grazing allotments, couple that math with running a registered herd that needs to have 2 cycles of breeding to guarantee they’re bred to our bulls after ai-ing and our steep mountain terrain.

Why would anyone calve in January? #ranchlife
I see people who don’t calve in Jan throwing out some ridiculous answers.
The truth is different for every ranch so I can only tell you our why, but I can promise you that it rarely has anything to do w/trying to put on extra pounds.
Thank you to @SimoRaty for an amazing couple weeks of his life! Please be sure to keep following his adventures #ff
Good morning! Tax day is it - I do the bookkeeping myself but the rest of the stuff I like to do together with advisor. It is good to get an outside opinion about how my farm economics are running and maybe learn some more new tricks
Short thread about cow husbandry in winter. In summary, suckler cows don't mind the winter, if basics are okay: that means water, food, dry place to sleep. Everything Else is just icing on the cake. I talked about water earlier. Food is simple, 1/
I like to have winter pastures for cows. It takes some planning anf effort, biggest risk is icy places which may be slippery under hoof. Last year I lost two cows because they slipped and broke legs. Pros of winter pastures are really good: clean fur, better hoof health 3/
Winter is good time to study. At morning there was presentation about calf health. But first Cup of Coffee and a nice piece of cake 1/
After presentation we went to visit @JariKauhanen1 farm. It is good to see other farms, you can get new ideas. Nice farm, beautiful cows and clever ideas to farm management 2/2
Snowy workday it is! Good moment to talk about winter logistics. One word: exciting. There are few things here: snow, ice, darkness, weather and other traffic.
Snow has both pros and cons. In one hand, it's safer to store stuff in field when there's enough snow and frost 1/
Bonus 2. The aging and be coming desolate is problem for winter maintenance in rural areas. When there's less people, the public interest to winter maintenance gets lower too. That is real problem in some parts of Finland. Problem also rise if animal farm stops production.. 9/
