Legendary Manager and Host of 'The Horne Sounds' Pro Wrestling Podcast Jackson C. Horne's Review of Last Night's AWA Wrestling Night in the Heartland heartlandbarandgrill.wordpre… Alright, listen up, you goddamn marks and smarts alike. I just sat through this Americana Wrestling Alliance “Wrestling Night in the Heartland” from Valparaiso, Indiana, and I gotta tell you—somebody out there in the Midwest still remembers what professional wrestling is supposed to look like. Not this sports-entertainment carnival of five-way scramble matches for a belt that means less than a participation ribbon. Not a bunch of gymnasts flipping around like they’re in a Cirque du Soleil reject audition. Just rankings matches that actually mean something, hot Midwestern crowds waving signs for the local babyfaces, and a card built around who climbs the ladder and who falls the hell off it. That’s not nostalgia, folks—that’s competence. That’s the way it used to be done when the business still had a brain. First match: Korver Sisters versus the Working Girls for the number three and four spots in the Women’s Americana Tag Team division. Sixteen minutes and forty-three seconds of actual tag-team psychology. One girl takes the beating, sells it like it goddamn hurts, crawls her ass over for the tag, her sister comes in like a freight train and they hit the double-team finisher while the other partner is cut off outside. Crowd pops for the grit. Losers show a little respect instead of throwing a five-year-old tantrum. And they came out to John Cougar Mellencamp and Donna Summer. In Indiana. That’s how you book a regional promotion, not some indie trying to be AEW Lite with flippy shit and no selling. The Korvers move up, Working Girls drop—simple, clean, effective. Somebody teach the rest of the business that sequence before they all starve. Next: Kirsten Canfield versus Catherine Cline, number three versus four in the Women’s Americana singles. Technical masterclass from Canfield. Rope-running, stalling, using every legal second to frustrate the babyface while the Iowa crowd gets hotter and hotter. Clean finish with the finisher. No kick-outs from the dead. No “I kicked out because I’m special and the universe loves me.” Just a good old-fashioned “I out-wrestled you, sweetheart.” Canfield stays at three, Cline gets the respectful applause for the effort. Beautiful. Pure. The kind of match that used to fill buildings from Wichita to Des Moines without needing a light show or a drone. Then Kenny Brumberg of the Highwaymen versus that “Rock Star” Robbie Marrs. Five and a half minutes of pure heat. Heel faction outside, distraction, shove off the top rope, DDT on the injured arm, three-count. Dirty finish that makes the babyface look strong in defeat and the heels look like the assholes they’re supposed to be. The Highwaymen don’t even gloat—they just stand there like they own the building. That’s heat. That’s how you get people to pay to see the rematch instead of staying home and watching TikToks of people falling off roofs. Southern Boys versus the Kentucky Redneck Mafia. Eighteen minutes of stiff Midwestern brawling with managers jawing on the outside. Power versus power, isolation, running lariats, clean three-count. Southern Boys keep their ranking; Rednecks drop and look like they want blood. No needless high spots. No “we’re all friends after the bell.” Just two teams that hate each other and a referee who’s lucky to still have his teeth. That’s the kind of tag match that used to fill barns from Louisville to Cedar Rapids. Remember barns? Remember when people actually cared who won? And the presentation! Thunderbolt Smith and Long Haul Rick Hall calling it straight instead of trying to be the stars. Proper ring announcers. Backstage interviews that actually advance stories instead of being five minutes of word salad. A ranking system that makes every house show matter. A commercial that literally says “NO SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT BULLSHIT.” The owners sitting at the merch table talking to the fans like human beings. At least somebody remembers the territory days weren’t about hiding behind a curtain and treating the marks like cattle. Main event’s two champions teaming against the faction that’s been running their mouths all week. Bad blood, expected chaos, promise of more heat next time. That’s how you build a territory. Put the titles on the line by association, let the heels get their heat, let the babyfaces fight from underneath, and send the people home wanting the next card. It’s not perfect. Nothing is. But it’s honest. It’s regional. The matches mean something. The crowds care. And for one night in Valparaiso, Indiana, professional wrestling didn’t look like a fucking cartoon. Somebody buy these people a beer. And somebody else send the Young Bucks a tape so they can see what wrestling looked like before they and their little friends ruined it for everybody. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna light another cigar and try to forget the last twenty years of this business for five goddamn minutes.
