The lecture by American neuroscientist Anne Andrews was one of the highlights of this year's Brain Awareness Week at the #CzechAcademy. Prof. Andrews focuses on the neurochemical aspect of the brain. She and her team, studying the connection between serotonin and stress or depression, have developed a special sensor that measures individual neurotransmitters – see the study here: science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

1/3 New serotonin (5-HT) GRAB sensors! We developed largely-improved green and all-new red genetically encoded fluorescent 5-HT sensors for dual-color imaging in vivo. Using these new 5-HT sensors, we are able to simultaneously monitor 5-HT and other neurochemicals.

The Serotonin Hypothesis of Depression is finally dead! I applaud the review by Montcreiff, Horowitz and coauthors and hope to never have to explain again that there is no evidence for “low brain serotonin” in humans with depression. nature.com/articles/s41380-0… – at Massachusetts, USA

Dagher and Perrotta et al found that ‘selective’ optogenetic stimulation of dopamine cell bodies produced striatal release of not only dopamine, but serotonin and 3-MT too! @merel_dagher @katieperrotta @SARAtonin_sci @AMASerotoninLab @mindceleste @UCLA go.acs.org/1eC

1/4 New discovery from Yulong Li Lab! We found that 5-HT regulates the coincidence time window of one-trial olfactory learning in both behavior and circuitry plasticity levels. #coincidence time window #olfactory_learning #GRAB_sensors

tl;dr Optogenetics is magical, but circuits are still circuits. So when you activate "your neurons" you may be activating whole circuits you don't fully understand causing what appear to be "off target" effects, which could lead to misinterpretation! Beware!
