If you've ever wondered why smart TVs are so cheap, this is why.
@log4j rooted his Samsung and found an always-on hot mic, automatic content recognition, geolocation, network mapping, ad targeting and user profiling, shared with Samsung's "400 partners".
A lot of it can be blocked in <15 min, wrote a basic guide below.
What your TV is doing
The main culprit is ACR (automatic content recognition). Your TV screenshots what's on screen, fingerprints it, and sends it home to build your ad profile. Samsung does it every 500ms, LG every 10ms [1].
What is insane: it happens on connected devices too.
Plug in your laptop, your console, your work machine, and your TV can fingerprint that via HDMI [1].
He also found that if your Samsung doesn't have a mic, it'll look for one from a connected soundbar or bluetooth device.

It's on by default, and you likely agreed to it on the setup screen you clicked through in 10 seconds.
Step 1: Turn off ACR
Samsung: Terms & Privacy → Viewing Information Services
LG: Live Plus
Vizio: Viewing Data
Roku: "Use info from TV inputs"
Sony/Google TV: Samba Interactive TV
Menus vary by model, but those are the names to look for. While you're in there, opt out of interest-based ads, reset your advertising ID, decline every optional privacy agreement, turn off voice recognition, and delete apps you never open.
Step 2: Give smart devices their own network
Put the TV, cameras, speakers and vacuum on your router's guest/IoT network. The logic is simple: these devices rarely get patched. If one gets compromised (getting drastically more frequent with AI), it shouldn't be able to see your other devices or home network.
Step 3: Block trackers for the whole house with DNS-level filtering
NextDNS (cloud-based) is easy and has a solid free plan. Pi-hole is a little bit more work if you prefer self hosting. For simplicity we'll focus on the former.
1. Sign up at nextdns.io (free tier is plenty)
2. Privacy tab: add a blocklist (OISD is a good bet) and turn on Native Tracking Protection for Samsung, LG, Roku, Amazon (see attached image)
3. Setup tab: copy your endpoint
4. Paste it into your router's DNS settings as DNS-over-HTTPS/TLS (or use the IPs + "Link IP" if your router only does plain DNS)
5. Bonus: block outbound port 53 except to your router. Some devices hardcode their own DNS to get around you
Then open the NextDNS logs and watch how often your TV phones home. It's eye-opening. If an app or update breaks, find the domain in the logs and allowlist it.
Why they do this
TV prices are down 97% since 2000 [2]. Most of that is better manufacturing and brutal competition. But once margins on the hardware hit zero, the cost moved to you.
In Q3 2024, Vizio lost $6.7M selling TVs and made $115.8M in gross profit from ads and viewing data [3]. They've said on earnings calls that they keep TV prices low to grow the audience they sell to advertisers. Walmart bought them in 2024.
This isn't a conspiracy theory either. Vizio paid $2.2M to the FTC in 2017 for tracking 11 million TVs without consent. Last December, Texas sued Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense and TCL over ACR. Samsung and LG have since agreed to stop collecting that data without explicit consent [4].

Six "jailers" were fired, but were they arrested?
The autopsy reads "HOMICIDE." Bubba was murdered while he was in jail, but NOT by fellow inmates. The only other people who had access to Gary "Bubba" Blair while he was incarcerated were the "jailers," employees of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office. Therefore, the ONLY people who could have possibly committed the HOMICIDE were the "jailers" themselves.
Per Sheriff Cambo Streater:
"This remains an active investigation. SLED is the investigating agency and is conducting a thorough and comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding this case and all available evidence."
(SLED is the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.)
Chesterfield County Sheriff Cambo Streater further stated that the firings do not mean that criminal charges won't be filed.
The sheriff SHOULD have said, "Terminating these employees is just the beginning. A HOMICIDE has taken place in my jail. Criminal charges and arrests WILL follow, as soon as the HOMICIDE investigation is complete."
Troy Ellerbe, the Director of the Chesterfield County Detention Center during Gary "Bubba" Blair's incarceration, was fired 5 days after Blair was found dead on his jail cell floor. Since then, 5 more jail employees have been fired. Questions remain:

Concerned neighbors in Brooklyn are reporting a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing situation involving a dog that has been kept on a balcony for nearly two years.
The dog is not being taken outside for walks at all. According to multiple neighbors, it is kept on the balcony 24/7, regardless of the weather. Neighbors report seeing the dog lying in its own urine next to its feces. They also say the dog is sometimes left without water and is food.
The dog reportedly barks frequently and appears to be in distress.
How is this allowed to continue?
Multiple neighbors say they have already contacted 311, animal control, and the police but say the situation has continued.
One neighbor wrote in a message: “I'm glad someone else noticed that dog has been on that balcony for almost two years surrounded by its feces and urine fed 2-3 times a week but only once a day the owner never walked the dog.
I've taken a lot of pictures even of the owner I've called 311 on numerous occasions and animal control and the police department to no avail! And I even sent an email to the property manager with pictures nothing was done...
One time recently the fender didn't feed or give water for 5 days it rained and the dog was licking the rails of the balcony because it was so thirsty.”

A Massachusetts family says the state took custody of their teenage daughter after they refused to affirm her as a boy, citing their Catholic faith.
The parents allege a school counselor socially transitioned their daughter without their knowledge, then reported them to the Department of Children and Families.
Now the state has guardianship, and a restraining order prevents the teen's parents and older brother from contacting her.

There's a harsh reality we need to address.
We watched the show, clapped for the Heroes fighting evil, dreamed of being one someday.
But when it comes right down to reality?
We didn't save the cheerleader.
We didn't even try.
We weren't willing to hold those accountable who have and are harming our nation's children, we shrugged as our elected leaders ignored the evidence. We just nodded along when records were withheld, when leaders handed out empty binders while calling it a hoax, and while our own House Speaker now simply steps over the bodies of children in those still undisclosed files and pretends it's just been too long for them to matter and it's someone else's job.
We as the American public continue to demand... nothing... accept... nothing.

Gulf War troops did not just fight Iraq. They came home sick, and a lot of what hit them was not incoming fire.
When Iraqi forces pulled out of Kuwait they lit hundreds of oil wells. Estimates run from about 600 to 750. The smoke turned day into night. Guys used flashlights at noon. That cloud was raw petroleum, soot, and sulfur sitting low over the ground. It coated skin, clothes, and lungs.
Fear of a chemical attack put about 250,000 troops on pyridostigmine bromide pills. Those were meant as a pretreatment against nerve agents. A lot of soldiers got sick right away. Nausea, cramps, diarrhea. Later studies tied the pills, especially when mixed with heavy pesticide use, to lasting nerve problems.
The chemical threat was not only theoretical. After the fight, coalition forces blew Iraqi ammo bunkers at Khamisiyah. That release sent a plume of low-level sarin and cyclosarin downwind. Tens of thousands of troops were later judged to have been in the path of it. Most of them never knew it at the time.
The desert was also thick with insects. Uniforms got soaked with pesticides again and again. Some troops even wore dog flea collars on their boots or necks. Add MOPP suits in 100-degree heat, constant chemical alarms, and dust from depleted uranium rounds around wrecked armor, and you have a stack of exposures that did not end when the ceasefire did.
A lot of veterans spent years being told it was in their heads. The record says otherwise.

What the hell are we doing?
H.R. 4795, the Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act, is moving through Congress right now. It would make colleges that participate in certain commercial boycotts of Israel ineligible for major federal higher education funding.
And who can end up paying the price for that? American students who rely on Pell Grants and veterans who rely on federal education benefits.
Over a boycott involving a FOREIGN COUNTRY.
We can boycott Bud Light. We can boycott Target. We can boycott Disney, Nike, Walmart or any other American company we disagree with. Conservatives have done it for years. But suddenly when the boycott involves Israel, the federal government needs to step in and start threatening funding?
Why?
And maybe this is what is really getting under my skin lately. Why does it feel like everything in Washington revolves around Israel?
I voted for America First. I meant AMERICA FIRST.
I don't care about Israel's feelings about an American boycott. I care about Americans. I care about our students, our veterans, our rights and our Constitution.
I don't have to support BDS to defend someone's right to boycott. That's the whole damn point of the First Amendment. It protects speech and political expression even when you hate it.
We spent years fighting government censorship and screaming about the weaponization of federal power. We don't get to suddenly decide it's okay when the government is using that power for something we agree with.
Stop putting Americans in the crossfire to protect a foreign country from criticism.
American students first!
American veterans first!
American rights first!
American ranchers first!
American employees first!
