“In late spring 2020, a source I knew to be reliable called me with a story,” writes Matthew Cole. “The Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner’s phone and monitored him as he accessed a Dubai-based bank account. What was odd, the source said, was that the money in the account—hundreds of millions of dollars—had come from a bank in Azerbaijan. Most importantly, Kushner appeared to have transferred significant amounts of money from the Dubai account to other individuals, including a warlord, a mercenary and a one-time hit man. The story sounded preposterous, I told my source. And yet. Six months later, I found myself speaking with someone else about the UAE government and their use of mercenaries in conflicts around the Middle East and Africa when I asked, on a whim, whether they knew anything about Kushner and bank transfers from a UAE account. My acquaintance grew quiet. Then they replied, ‘Yes.’” Kushner’s lawyer denied the bank account existed. Follow @ancc_cnac for the latest news and views about our Armenian community in Canada.
Sevag Belian, the executive director of the Armenian National Committee of Canada, says any nuclear deal with Turkey deserves close scrutiny.  He pointed to the previous falling out between the two countries which resulted in Canada imposing a de facto arms embargo, which was mostly lifted in 2024. The lifting of those measures was the price Erdogen demanded of the Trudeau government for getting behind Sweden's membership in NATO. The fallout started in 2020 when Turkish authorities applied for an exemption related to importation of Wescam target acquisition gear used in Turkey's Bayraktar drones. "We know from the disclosed documents that they had said that they will be using the few cameras that they got through the exemption for reconnaissance activities related to NATO operations in the north of Syria," said Belian. "But then we know that those cameras were actually diverted illegally to Azerbaijan and used during the war in Nagorno Karabakh. "We have established through parliamentary investigation that the Turkish side clearly lied." cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-…

Crossing Canadians of Armenian heritage comes with political costs.
Speaking to CTV News, ANCC’s Sevag Belian expressed the Armenian-Canadian community’s “alarm and concern” over Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Turkey and the prospect of deepening bilateral relations. “As Canadians, we’re very supportive of the government’s efforts to diversify trade relations. We just do not believe at all that Turkey is the right partner,” Belian stated, pointing to Ankara’s human rights record and its “destabilizing role” in the region. Belian also raised concerns that closer relations could place Canada’s longstanding recognition of the Armenian Genocide on the negotiating table. “We are very fearful that the Turkish side will put this issue on the table. But we are hopeful that the Canadian side won’t budge,” he told CTV News. Canada formally recognized the Armenian Genocide in 2004, a historic position that the ANCC remains committed to safeguarding.

@ANCA_DC Demanding that Armenia amend its Constitution as a precondition for peace is itself a challenge to Armenia's sovereignty. A truly durable peace cannot be built on one side dictating changes to the other's foundational legal framework. Claims that Armenia is not committed to peace also ignore Azerbaijan's ongoing destruction of Armenian cultural heritage and the continued detention of Armenian political prisoners without due process. Peace requires accountability and mutual respect, not coercion. #ArmenianGenocide #Armenia #Azerbaijan #SouthCaucasus #TRIPP
We are concerned about Armenia’s apparent attempts to delay creating the conditions necessary for signing the peace agreement and fulfilling its other obligations. Armenia appears unwilling to remove territorial claims against Azerbaijan from its Constitution. Its government has taken no meaningful political or legal steps towards this end. Prime Minister Pashinyan’s suggestion that the peace agreement might not be signed until 2031 is particularly incomprehensible. Given the rapid, unpredictable developments in the region and beyond, postponing the agreement for five years would effectively take it off the agenda. Such an approach violates Armenia’s commitments under the Joint Declaration signed in Washington on 8 August 2025, in which Armenia undertook to pursue “further actions to achieve the signing and ultimate ratification of the Agreement.” This necessarily entails removing territorial claims against Azerbaijan from its Constitution. The lack of progress on Armenia’s part in implementing TRIPP represents another failure to fulfil its obligation to ensure unimpeded connectivity between the western regions of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It also delays the delivery of tangible benefits essential to sustaining positive momentum in the peace process. So far, the only visible practical benefits of peace have resulted from Azerbaijan’s goodwill in facilitating transit and exports to Armenia. Prime Minister Pashinyan’s public suggestion of a possible exchange of exclaves came as a surprise to Azerbaijan, as the issue has never been discussed through established bilateral channels. Border-related matters should be addressed within the agreed delimitation and demarcation framework, following the agreed north-to-south sequence. An exception could be considered for the section relevant to TRIPP, when conditions are conducive. Azerbaijan remains committed to achieving lasting peace, but Armenia’s delaying tactics and the uncertainty created by its actions do not help this objective. Just as it was wrong to prolong the peace process during the period of occupation in the hope that Azerbaijan would eventually accept the status quo, it is equally wrong to delay the process now in the expectation that Azerbaijan will abandon its demand for the removal of territorial claims from Armenia’s Constitution. Armenia should act without further delay to address Azerbaijan’s concerns and demonstrate its genuine commitment to peace.
