Who’d have thought my support for UK’s Online Safety Act would attract so many anonymous warriors who
•dismiss online abuse by being abusive online
•champion freedom of speech except for those who disagree with them
•think protections for children will put children at risk?

Reminder of how hard Xmas can be for those who have lost someone to suicide.
Some of whom have campaigned & transformed public understanding.
To them & so many bereaved families, a peaceful Xmas & a hopeful 2025.

#Suicideprevention themes in 2024 that will matter in 2025:
•why did suicide rate rise, as reported by ONS?
•is media coverage of online risks helping or harmful?
•how to stop #AssistedDying debate undermining prevention
•can data from campaigners be trusted?

Not everything benefits from being highlighted in the media.
It’s important not to make new suicide methods better known, to tackle them under the radar. Even if it looks like nothing is being done.
It’s an area of top priority for the national #SuicidePrevention strategy.

Reminder that speculation about a cause of death can be harmful, causing distress & adding to risk in people already vulnerable.
And it is often wrong.

Today, with huge thanks to Ealing Hospital, we planted a tree - the UK’s only memorial to NHS staff who have died by suicide. May they rest in peace, and may we redouble our efforts to stop it happening ever in the future. 3/3

Lots of people tweeted me afterwards saying they’d been to Ealing and looked for the tree, then felt silly when they realised it didn’t exist. I didn’t think it was silly - I thought there should be a memorial to healthcare professionals who have taken their own lives. 2/3

Here’s a nice thing. The TV version of This Is Going To Hurt is all about the mental health of doctors, and culminates with the death by suicide of a junior doctor called Shruti (spoiler alert). There is a scene where a tree is planted in her memory, shot at Ealing Hospital. 1/3

A destructive narrative on the NHS is gaining ground. The most influential people, political & media, blame its problems on inefficiency, GPs, the “bottomless pit”, no ref to staffing, demography or even Covid.
How did this analysis take hold, who is pushing it & who benefits?

Our study of online experience of young people who die by suicide shows need to reduce online harms. But #suicide is complex, people’s lives are complex.
We also found exam pressure, bereavement, social withdrawal, physical ill health, past abuse & dom violence played a part.
1/4 people under 20 who died by suicide had suicide-related online experiences, esp seaching for methods. More common in girls, probably an under-estimate.

They found the cause of SIDS
THEY FOUND THE CAUSE OF SIDS
Excuse me while I cry for all the parents, including lead researcher Dr Carmel Harrington, who lived with guilt. And cry happy tears for parents in the future who will have access to screening and prevention. 😭
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
It is misleading to say that we have found the cause of SIDS; one study has identified an enzyme that might be a potential biomarker for SIDS vulnerability (correlation not causation). The correlation is statistically significant but relatively weak.
