In Oleshky, Ukraine, thousands of people are trapped in territory occupied by the Russian army, without regular access to food and medicine. Mined areas make escape extremely dangerous: those who stay risk dying of hunger, those who try to leave risk their lives. To draw international attention to this emergency, I have announced a hunger strike. But this battle cannot be mine alone. I call on associations, citizens, and national and local institutions to join this great nonviolent action. We must demand an immediate humanitarian truce, the entry of food and medicines, and the possibility of safely evacuating civilians who wish to leave the city. You can join by clicking here: spaziopubblico.eu/save-olesh… With this mobilisation, we want to support the efforts of Pope Leo XIV and of all those who, in this moment, are doing everything possible to avert a humanitarian tragedy of enormous proportions. The people of Oleshky cannot be abandoned. It is time to act together, so that diplomacy delivers concrete results and no one is left to die in silence. #saveoleshky 👇 I speak about it in the interview published today in La Repubblica, which you can find below.

The Insider.

Free Alexei Navalny’s lawyers! Alexei Navalny’s lawyers, Vadim Kobzev and Alexei Liptser, courageously defended him against baseless and absurd charges, despite the inhumane conditions and total isolation he endured. Thanks to their efforts, we know how Navalny was deprived of sleep and medical care, and kept in a freezing solitary confinement cell for months. For that, they were themselves arrested and sent to penal colonies thousands of kilometres away from their families. They are true heroes who now deserve the same attention and support they once gave to others.

Russian oligarchs continue to pursue independent media across Europe. Vitaly Orlov, worth $1.2 billion, owns the sanctioned fishing company Norebo. He is now attempting to bankrupt the independent outlet @BarentsNews. He has filed a claim in the High Court of London, described by the newspaper as “absurd and dirty” thebarentsobserver.com/news/… By a striking coincidence, The Barents Observer has long been a thorn in the side of the Russian authorities. This small newspaper covers developments in the Barents region and the Arctic — areas of strategic importance to Russia. Its conflict with the Russian state has lasted more than a decade. This is not solely because its reporting is critical, touching on the military sphere, the environment and minority rights. The decisive factor is that the paper publishes in Russian, covering events that Russia’s censored media refuse to report. Its editor was banned from entering Russia in 2017; the website was blocked inside the country in 2019; the Prosecutor General’s Office demanded its closure in 2022; and its Russian staff have been pursued at home. In 2025 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the blocking was unlawful, yet the authorities responded by declaring The Barents Observer an “undesirable organisation”, so that any cooperation with it now carries criminal liability.

Vitaly Orlov does not wish to be associated with the sanctioned company he owns, even though the fact of his ownership is recorded even by the Russian edition of Forbes. The reason is simple: the sanctions against his firm rest on its alleged involvement in espionage and sabotage activities (eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-cont…). His actions play into the hands of the Russian authorities. It is hard not to see a coordinated assault in which the Kremlin, using the hands and money of an oligarch dependent on the state, seeks to settle scores with uncensored journalism. The cost of proceedings in the High Court of London is ruinous for a small independent title, while for an oligarch it may represent only a modest fee for a service rendered to the authorities. That Vitaly Orlov depends on the favour of the Russian state is built into the very nature of his business. Norebo is a typical large holder of fishing quotas from the Russian authorities. Without those quotas the company could not conduct industrial fishing on anything like its present scale. If it were to lose the quotas issued by the Russian state, Orlov’s business would disappear. It is therefore no surprise that the attack on The Barents Observer serves the interests of both the Russian authorities and an oligarch closely tied to them. Vitaly Orlov is not the first to pursue independent media in this way. The oligarch Alisher Usmanov followed the same path, contesting any mention of his business in connection with the Russian authorities. For him it ended in the lifting of sanctions following a discreditable decision by the EU. It is reasonable to suppose that Vitaly Orlov is pursuing the same dual strategy: rendering services to the Russian authorities while simultaneously scrubbing unwelcome references to his name from the public record.

The Graham Act is a fascinating case study of the complicated and contested nature of Russia sanctions policy under Trump. There are so many different dynamics at play that the story could easily fill a book.
Replying to @jakluge
The Graham Act was never realistic (esp. huge tariffs on RU oil buyers such as China), and I don't believe Graham himself expected Trump to do what the Act says. And the White House only agreed to the law after the possibility for a comprehensive waiver was included in July.
