After thinking about affective polarization every single day of my life for more than 7 years now, it feels really great to see a part of my work published in @apsrjournal. A massive thank you to my co-authors Diego Garzia, @Frederico_FS, and @Atrechsel for making this possible!
New article out at the @apsrjournal with @AReiljan, D. Garzia, and @Atrechsel

📢Election day in Poland! In case you are wondering which presidential candidate is closest/furthest to your views, have a look at the voting advice application we developed at the @EUI_EGPProg in co-operation with the Stan Foundation:

Very proud that polarization beats demure as the word of the year!
The Merriam-Webster Word of the Year for 2024 is ‘polarization.’
About half of you might take issue with this.

EU&I2024 ending on a high note with a geographically and topically very diverse workshop. We had an especially strong attendance from Central Eastern and Southern Europe. Stay tuned for the dataset(s) release in early 2025 (and as you can see from the slide, our data is good)!
Always happy to visit @CEUDemInst!
Using some visual aid from @SouthPark to explain what is affective polarization to a room full of scholars and students in Murcia. It was great fun, thank you for the invitation, @derjota!
It was a pleasure to host @AReiljan at UMU for our seminar ‘Affective polarisation: transnational and multidimensional perspectives’.
Fantastic to know that he is also a big fan of Southpark!
Kind of symbolic that the first handbook of affective polarization comes out a few days before the very polarized US election. Happy to have contributed a chapter on AP in Europe, 5 years after I published my first article on this very same topic (ejpr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com…).
30 Chapters with amazing contribuitors.
It is open access, pre-registered preprint:

And a big applause to @MarianoTorcal and @EelcoHarteveld for putting this gargantuan project together!
My interview with @EUI_Schuman on affective polarization, covering the basic stuff and some worrisome thoughts about the upcoming US election.
How does affective polarisation impact our daily lives and democracy?
↪️ In this interview, @AReiljan shares insights into how political divisions shape society—from everyday life to democratic norms—breaking down the causes, consequences, and potential solutions.

Of all the datasets in the world, none have I worked with more than the CSES. Very thrilled to receive the Best CSES Scholarship 2024 prize for this old-school comparative politics paper with Diego Garzia, @Frederico_FS, and @Atrechsel. Thank you for the honour, @csestweets!
The winner of the 2024 GESIS Klingemann Prize is “Patterns of Affective Polarization toward Parties and Leaders across the Democratic World” by Reiljan, Garzia, Ferreira Da Silva (@Frederico_FS), and Trechsel (@Atrechsel) in @apsrjournal. Congratulations!

A nice review of the quickly-expanding comparative research on affective polarization -- including comments from Jim Adams on our work (with @Rwillh11) on how types of ideological disputes and economic circumstances relate to partisan dislike.

Affective polarization is a prominent topic in the US media, but it deserves public attention also in many other countries. Happy to see my work and comments featured alongside @alessandro_nai and several others in this summary piece in @KnowableMag.
Thanks to @KnowableMag for the shout-out on our research on attack politics and affective polarization

Congratulations! 🎊
In only 30 days EU&I welcomed about 2 million users and 850,000 of them competed the questionnaire!👏
Today we celebrate the dedication and hard work of everyone involved! 🙌
Thank you 🫂

Be skeptical of alarmist polls on support for political violence. There are good methodological reasons to question (many) results.
Accounting for major sources of error, we find that most survey estimates of support are indistinguishable from 0.
See our working paper. with @_mdtyler and @JustinGrimmer
⏰Alarmed by polls reported in the @nytimes suggesting that millions support political violence? Those estimates are inflated. New working paper: surveys provide imprecise estimates of how many think political violence is justified; high-quality surveys are consistent with <1%.

The EU&I app saw remarkable engagement from citizens across 🇪🇺 Europe, seeking alignment with political parties ahead of the 🗳️ #EUelections.
How does this 15-year-long initiative serve both citizens and political science research?

A week ago, we kicked off a two-day workshop on affective (de)polarization, bringing researchers from both sides of the Atlantic together @EUI_Schuman. It was a great honour to introduce the keynote of Prof. Shanto Iyengar - the founding father of affective polarization research.
Today we welcome Shanto Iyengar & a full room of scholars working on affective polarization! Excited to hear about recent trends in the field, both in the US and Europe, in the year of contentious pre-/post-election debates on both continents!

Whether you are already sure who to vote for in the European Parliament election or still deciding if you want to vote at all, have a look at what we have created in co-operation with more than 150 researchers across the EU. There indeed a lot of treasures in there! #EUandI

Some more media coverage for our EU&I app (euandi.eu/). Always nice to be published in new languages that I don't speak a word of. Obrigado, @expresso!

A lot of my time and effort this year has gone into this project. We have placed nearly 300 parties across the EU on 30 political issues, so that European voters can compare their positions with them. Here is a little glimpse into this vast data, much more to come! #EUandI
📖 W/ the #EPelections approaching, a new analysis from researchers working on the EU&I voting advice application reveals key insights into parties' positioning and citizens' preferences. 🗳️
