Remittances play a crucial role in supporting millions of families across Latin America and beyond. However, viewing them solely through the lens of financial inflow overlooks the profound human cost: family separation driven by economic necessity and immigration policies. This separation is a sacrifice, often with one parent working abroad to send money home. While these funds benefit recipient countries, they also reveal a stark economic reality for the United States. Studies indicate that the departure of remittance-sending workers could significantly impact the U.S. economy, potentially causing a recession. Conversely, while immediate impacts of deportation might strain Latin American economies, the long-term effects could be beneficial. Each worker returning to their home country injects labor and generates economic value, potentially exceeding the value of remittances received. Immigrants, whether in their home country or abroad, are economic engines. The significant contribution of the Hispanic community to the U.S. economy, particularly its role in post-pandemic recovery and AI-driven growth, underscores their vital importance. Recognizing and valuing this economic power is crucial. #Remittances #Immigration #EconomicImpact #LatinAmerica #GlobalEconomy #Sociology

I just got back from a fact-finding trip to Cuba. America’s blockade is crushing the Cuban people. Our boot is on the their throat and for over 65 years of blockading their government, this policy is not working. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.
