Doing one of my best ever walks - with a mix of Pennine Bridleway and Dales High Way out from Settle and Back. Passing Victoria Cave (w/ hippo, rhino, elephant bones), Ing Scar, Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Attermire Scar. Absolute top tier walk awalkerstale.com/2026/06/pen…

The golden age of hiking...
'Hiking' by James Walker Tucker, 1936 in the Laing, Newcastle. The 1930s was the great era of popular hiking, fitness and fresh air. Railway companies and local authorities published walking guides, and there was a pub, a B&B or a youth hostel in every village to put you up. It has the air of a Ladybird Book illustration!

Not a single bit of specialist hiking gear, and not a single piece of squeaky GorTex 🥲 #peasants

Had the audacity to use the local trains on a school day (to go collect a bike), and all the oldies were discussing if I was a drug dealer or some other type of criminal😆 Thou shalt not leave the house😉

Honestly just stay home in this weather or at least do a valley, canal or old train line walk. There’s 365 days in a year, can give two a miss

If you've not seen this one yet, this one has been a wonderful trip up from Land's End to follow. Look back for all seventy-four days (of which most have had wonderful pictures) - and it's a great achievement. I personally need my bed after about three or four days on the move😆
Land's End to John o'Groats – Day 74: Wick to John o'Groats, 22 miles. 1,259.95 miles and done. Beautiful weather to finish the walk I started in March. A fab last day of castles, brochs, empty bays and amazing cliffs. Now... beer, bath, bed.

Once again in the North York Moors, walking a very pretty ridgeline section of the Coast to Coast (also the Cleveland Way) between Osmotherley and Battersby. Lovely weather for it once you blank out the ice cold wind on the higher ground awalkerstale.com/2026/10/coa…

Back out on the canals following a branch of the Grand Union Canal between Market Harborough and South Wigston. A very pretty stretch of canal, through some very quiet countryside (passing but not inspecting Foxton Locks along the way) awalkerstale.com/2026/10/gra…

We need a railcard for those spending over £x per year, and a national cap on fares per day/month. The amount I’ve spent on trains this year is insane (mostly if I use the pathetic excuse that is CrossCountry - blame shared with the idiots at DfT)
How have we let this happen as a country

Walking the upper end of the Esk Valley Walk from Castleton up Danby Dale, past Rosedale Head, along Farndale Moor, and then along the River Esk back to Castleton. A lovely walk, at a lovely time of year for walking🍂 awalkerstale.com/2026/10/esk…

Walking the Teesdale Way from Barnard Castle to Darlington, completing the trail from Dufton to Middlesbrough (I don't care to go further). Featuring royal rebellion, a Scottish King, a Roman Fort, and a lot of very quiet countryside awalkerstale.com/2026/10/tee…

Thames Path? Completed it... A varied trail that runs from the Thames Barrier past all the historic (and modern) sights of London, before you wind through the Thames towns to Oxford - and out across rural countryside to a field in the middle of nowhere awalkerstale.com/p/thames-pa…

Walking the final section of the Thames Path from Lechlade up to the source of the Thames near Kemble. A fairly remote section of path that sees the river increasingly disappear until it becomes nothing more than a dip in a field awalkerstale.com/2026/10/tha…

Not a fan of these campaigns to make every trail a National Trail. Appreciate it’s good for tourism but the National Trails should be the best of the best, and the Icknield Way isn’t that standard thecomet.net/news/26599207.c…

Cycled along and past the diverted route of the Coast to Coast to avoid the A19 crossing - and it really does look a weak route. Surely someone will find the money for a cheap bridge from A to B over the A19 (I think the original plan had one costed at £1m)

On up the Thames Path from Newbridge to Lechlade - with one section left until the source is reached, and the trail is complete. This is a very rural meandering stretch of the river that takes us (almost) to the end of the navigable stretch of the Thames awalkerstale.com/2026/09/tha…

Writeup added for Newbridge to Oxford along the Thames Path (I will add Newbridge to Lechlade tomorrow). A very rural, but slightly low key section of the River Thames that feels a very long way away from London - and a very quiet stretch to walk along awalkerstale.com/2026/09/tha…

The following section of the Oxford Canal - doing a longer walk from Kidlington (just north of Oxford) up to Banbury. An incredibly rural stretch of canal, but with a fair bit of undergrowth to battle through along the way - it was still very lovely awalkerstale.com/2026/09/oxf…
