Calling it a “total rule” that the Constitution avoided established religion doesn’t erase the fact that the Founding Fathers were overwhelmingly Christians and built the country on Christian principles.
The Declaration of Independence explicitly grounds unalienable rights in the Creator and appeals to “the Supreme Judge of the world” and “Divine Providence.” Most of the signers and framers were members of Christian denominations (Anglican/Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Congregationalist, etc.), regularly referenced Scripture, and viewed biblical morality as the foundation for ordered liberty.
Early state constitutions often required officeholders to be Protestant or Christian, and public life (Congress, education, law) was steeped in Christian practice and language.
The Constitution’s prohibition on a national established church was meant to protect religious freedom among the states and prevent a federal monopoly—not to create a secular blank slate or declare Christianity irrelevant.
The design presupposed a Christian people and culture; it did not invent rights or morality from nothing.
