"We estimate that Mr Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of around $37,000, almost 3% of their income. The richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3% (see chart 1). Households in the middle, with average income of roughly $100,000, lose more than $400"

Nusseibeh was the UAE’s point person on Sudan, according to Justin Lynch, managing director of the Conflict Insights Group research organization. “Throughout this war, she assured other governments that the UAE was not backing the RSF, even as Washington and other capitals knew internally that it was,” he told the AP.
The U.N. secretary-general’s role is to protect civilians from horrors like el-Fasher, Lynch said. “Handing the job over to the diplomat who ran cover for it would be an insult to the survivors.”

This is a shattering story of life in Sudan as the UAE-backed RSF militia slaughters and rapes people in the city of El Fasher. Hard for me to understand why anybody would think the UAE should be rewarded with the post of UN secretary general.
In four days, it will be a year since the siege of Sudan's El Fashir ended in a bloodbath. This is the story of a group of young doctors, nurses and volunteers who stayed at the last functioning hospital until the very end. With @hafiz54472061 economist.com/interactive/18…
This, by the unstoppable @khoureld, is one of the most extraordinary pieces I’ve ever worked on. There are unforgettable horrors in it, but also amazing moments of bravery and solidarity (and karaoke under drone strikes). Worth every minute of your time economist.com/interactive/18…

One of the world's greatest and bravest journalists, full stop. Solidarity.
In an absolutely egregious escalation against press freedom, Egyptian journalist and @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief @Linaattalah has been referred to trial on charges of establishing, managing, and operating a website without a license. Her trial is set to begin this Tuesday, Oct 27.

As well as being brilliant and funny, Sharon Horgan’s “Youth” also has a great soundtrack. 10/10 for pitch-perfect deployment of Au Pays du Cocaine and Everything in Its Right Place in the opening episode

1/2 Anthropic's latest report on detecting misuse of AI contains this case of an anti-Muslim Brotherhood campaign by the UAE. It includes a sockpuppet network of 300 accounts. But they also produced smears against UN-special rapporteurs which had criticised UAE conduct in Sudan
