Today is International Day of Sign Languages!
Observed every year on September 23, the International Day of Sign Languages recognises the importance of sign languages in advancing the rights, inclusion, and participation of deaf people in society.
The 2026 theme, “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” calls for action to make the human rights of deaf people a reality in all areas of life. It highlights the importance of recognising, protecting, and promoting these rights, including full access through national sign languages.
The Ministry of Education, through the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and its agencies, continues to strengthen inclusive education by developing Ghana’s first Sign Language curriculum from Kindergarten 1 to Senior High School 3. The curriculum provides a structured pathway for learners to develop proficiency in Ghanaian Sign Language and supports more inclusive teaching and learning environments for deaf learners.
This important milestone reflects the collaborative efforts of NaCCA, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), experts from our tertiary institutions, classroom partners, and support from Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL).
As we mark this year’s International Day of Sign Languages, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening Ghanaian Sign Language education, supporting teachers with the knowledge and skills they need and providing accessible teaching and learning materials.
At NaCCA, we believe every learner deserves an education they can access, understand and participate in.

Great research deserves more than recognition. It deserves to be seen, understood and connected to the people and communities it can impact. Across Africa, researchers and institutions are developing innovative solutions to some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.
🔎 Tag a researcher or institution whose story deserves to be told.
Let’s spotlight more African research, innovation and the impact it is creating.
