Name one thing excessively anchoring the narrative of a story entirely to a long existing story accomplished for its main narrative and message that couldn't have been achieved in an original/isolated AU setting that doesn't rob its characters of their presence in it.

I see this come up every now and then and it's funny no one seems to understand or accept that their common response isn't a conflicting statement. Yes, good people don't do it for benefits, that in itself doesn't disprove that there are no benefits to it.
Yeah, let's not talk about how the main antagonist of the first iteration of Transformers had an alternate mode he was literally incapable of using himself and needed another "person" to wield him despite his sentience, no different from needing a pilot.
