It seems likely that life had very simple beginnings. The first self-replicating organisms would have had used asexual reproduction, and would had a much easier time replicating than monkeys or humans, since there was far less to go wrong at the early stages. By the time lifeforms became numerous enough for in-breeding depression to be hazardous, there was more than enough breeding stock for that problem to be easily avoided. Complexity of the sort we are considering here (in mammals) took many millions of years to be slowly ratcheted up by natural selection. The mystery over the beginnings of life are really a specific subset of a wider mystery about the origins of the physical universe. We now understand that space and time are inexorably bound up with one another (one's movement in space affects the rate at which time passes as measured on a clock carried by the individual). Thus it is more proper to refer to "space-time" rather than "space and time". Given this, the big bang would seem to have been an explosion of time (/space), rather than something that happened in time. With this in mind, it becomes kind of meaningless to ask what happened before that event, since there was no time for it to happen in. That doesn't make the phenomenon of physical reality less interesting or mind-boggling, but perhaps it shifts the question to the nature of things, rather than of their "cause". > Do you believe in other dimensions ? When someone talks about a "higher dimension", in my experience they are usually unable to provide any particularly full or substantial description of what they're talking about, and very often it's a prelude to some kind of vague mysticism by way of wish they grant themselves permission to indulge in all sorts of wish-thinking, so I normally treat the term (and indeed those who use it) with caution. As for the creation of energy, one possibility is that if one adds up all the positive and negative energy in the universe, the sum comes to zero. I suspect that if one were given sufficient information about all the energy in the universe, this would be the result.
