Princess Grace with her daughter Princess Caroline in Paris in November 1975. The 18-year-old Caroline was studying at the Sorbonne at the time and relations between mother and daughter were slightly strained. Grace found Caroline to be occasionally rebellious and imprudent, wearing revealing swimsuits in Monaco and spending her nights in clubs, with unsuitable men. More pertinently, Grace was going through a bad patch in her marriage. Prince Rainier had become difficult, distant and unfaithful and Grace was finding the burden of being in the public eye intolerable. Accordingly, she had bought an apartment in Paris in order to escape both press scrutiny and her husband, while mending fences with her daughter.
