One of my good friends, MAJ George Hayworth of the Present Fathers Podcast, whom I had the pleasure of sitting down with for an interview last year, said this perfectly. No matter how much you accomplish, how many people you help, or how much good you try to put into the world, there will always be people determined to tear you down out of jealousy, bitterness, or pure spite. I’ve certainly learned that lesson firsthand. Your time is one of the most valuable things you possess, and so are your knowledge, energy, and willingness to help others. Be careful who you give them to. Not everyone deserves a seat at your table, access to your life, or even the satisfaction of a response. Surround yourself with people who build, encourage, and celebrate the success of others. Keep doing good, keep moving forward, and let the bitter people waste their own time. As I prepare to turn 39 and attend my 20th high school reunion, I’ve been reflecting on the suffering, loss, and unexpected turns that shaped who I am.
