Lake Chad has lost roughly nine-tenths of itself. "It is sad that both human and natural factors have conspired to shrink the waters of Lake Chad from as much as 33,000 square kilometres to less than 4,000 square kilometres in recent years." Governor Mai Mala Buni chairs the Lake Chad Basin Governors' Forum. The lake supports millions through fishing and agriculture across Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. As it retreated, livelihoods went with it, migration increased, and additional security challenges followed across the basin. Africa does not lack opportunity. What decides whether capital arrives is trust in the institutions behind it. Speaking at the House of Lords in July, Henry Fallah Saamoi, Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, put it in one sentence. In December, the Summit's Invest pillar picks up exactly this question: how the UK and Africa build markets investors can believe in. “The very first village that I went to was the village where my ancestors walked. I was more myself there than I am in Ohio. I didn’t have to think about my Blackness. I felt freer, fully free.” — Hasani Carter, genealogist and educator. Reconnecting the African diaspora with their ancestral roots is fueling a new era of heritage tourism, driving cultural exchange, economic investment, and lasting bridges across the Atlantic. Read the full article here: africanleadershipmagazine.co… #HeritageTourism #AfricanDiaspora #Ancestry #CulturalExchange #InvestInAfrica

Nigeria's streaming market is set for remarkable growth. Over-the-top (OTT) video, delivered over the internet rather than through traditional broadcast or pay-TV, is forecast to grow faster than any other national OTT video market through 2030. Unlocking this massive market requires balancing local purchasing power with accessible pricing, mobile-first strategies, and creative ad-supported bundling to transform rapid subscriber adoption into sustainable commercial growth. Read the full article to learn more: africanleadershipmagazine.co… #Nollywood #StreamingAfrica #OTT #DigitalMedia #CreativeEconom

"Beyond Aid" is not a slogan against aid. Aid has built relationships, schools and health systems across Africa, and it still matters. But it was never meant to be the whole story. The UK–Africa relationship is already moving on: towards investment, trade, security and skills. These are partnerships where both sides have something to gain and something to build. African governments want more value created at home. UK businesses, universities and investors want partners for the long term. That is the conversation we are bringing to London on 10–11 December, across seven sectors, from health and energy to critical minerals and skills. For Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, development rests on two foundations. Children who can learn, and families who can feed themselves. In a state where farming is the main source of livelihood, a good harvest means more than food on the table. It means income, stability and stronger communities. And every child in a classroom today is a step towards the skilled workforce Yobe will need tomorrow. Africa’s industrial challenge is not a shortage of raw materials, but the limited value the continent captures from them. Too much processing, technology development, skilled employment, and industrial profit still take place outside Africa after extraction. The Africa Raw Materials Summit is driving a decisive shift from the traditional "pit-to-port" export model to resource-based industrialization—building local factories, processing raw feedstock at home, and creating high-value jobs across the continent. Read the full article here: africanleadershipmagazine.co… #RawMaterialsSummit #ValueAddition #ResourceIndustrialisation #MadeInAfrica #EconomicSovereignty

Africa’s energy security is increasingly shaped by the ability to refine, store, and distribute fuel within the continent. The expansion of Dangote's energy footprint into East Africa—anchored by strategic investments in pipeline networks, storage hubs, and regional distribution—is set to reduce import dependency, eliminate supply bottlenecks, and power regional industries. Click the link below to read the details: africanleadershipmagazine.co… #DangoteRefinery #EnergySecurity #FuelInfrastructure #EastAfrica #AfricanIndustry

Africa’s forests, soils, freshwater systems, and remarkable biodiversity are more than environmental treasures. They underpin food production, livelihoods, energy security, and economic resilience. At the CBD COP17 summit, African leaders and financial institutions are advocating for scaled-up, accessible nature finance to protect vital ecosystems, manage nature-related risks, and turn biodiversity targets into funded, high-impact projects. Read the full article to learn more: africanleadershipmagazine.co… #COP17 #NatureFinance #Biodiversity #ClimateResilience #AfricanEcosystems

For years, the headlines about Africa have leaned towards fragility. Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said so directly when he addressed the 2025 Summit inside the UK Parliament. The story is changing. Investment, trade, security and skills are now at the centre of the UK–Africa conversation, and that is where this December's Summit begins. Every conversation about Africa's future eventually comes back to one question: whose ideas lead? At the 2025 Africa Summit London, Dr. Ken Giami answered it plainly. Growth that lasts is driven by African ideas, African enterprise and African solutions. This December, the Summit takes that idea into a new chapter: a UK–Africa partnership built on what both sides bring to the table. For H.E. Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, that idea has been tested in some of the hardest conditions any leader in Nigeria could face. He became Governor of Yobe State in 2019, when the state was still recovering from years of insurgency. One of his first major decisions was to declare a state of emergency in education, putting schools and children at the centre of the state's recovery. Since then, his work has reached beyond Yobe. As Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors' Forum, he works with leaders across the region on stability, livelihoods and the future of communities around the lake. Giving your best wherever you are takes on a different meaning when millions of people depend on the choices you make.
