Alphonse estimates net profit at RWF 15,000–20,000 daily, equivalent to RWF 450,000–600,000 monthly if he operates every day. Earnings support household needs and investment in land worth RWF 1.5 million.
His business serves an estimated 20–25 customers daily. A bulk buyer purchases more than 500 kg at a time for resale, extending access to farmers farther away and those who need smaller quantities.

🚲❄️ How much energy does it take to keep things cold? At our #MOP38 stand in Kigali, visitors pedalled a bicycle that powers a real refrigeration system and felt the cost of every degree. Cooling has a cost. We can choose a better one. #KigaliAmendment #CleanCooling

Globally, every dollar invested in improving nutrition is estimated to generate US$23 in economic returns. The cost of inaction could reach US$41 trillion over the next decade. Like other small island developing states (SIDS), São Tomé and Príncipe remains heavily dependent on imported foods, exposing it to external shocks and limiting opportunities for rural producers. Strengthening local food production and value chains, alongside targeted nutrition interventions, can help address these challenges. The IFAD-supported Commercialization, Agricultural Productivity and Nutrition Project (COMPRAN) demonstrates the value of nutrition-sensitive investments. By pairing support for local production with greater nutrition knowledge, the project helped translate increased food availability into healthier diets. COMPRAN-supported small-scale poultry farmers now supply eggs to schools through the National School Feeding Programme, improving access to nutritious local foods while creating reliable demand for rural producers. COMPRAN highlights how integrating nutrition into agricultural investments can improve diets, strengthen local markets and support long-term economic and social resilience. Mixing crops could be a game changer for your farm or the reason your harvest disappoints. The difference is in how you plan the combination. Two crops sharing a field also share sunlight, water, nutrients and space. A successful intercrop manages that competition so the combined harvest makes good use of the land. Before planting, look beyond the names of the crops. Consider their varieties, growth habits and maturity periods. Bush beans and climbing beans, for example, behave differently alongside another crop. Think about what the field will look like at full growth. Will the taller crop heavily shade the shorter one? Will spreading vines interfere with harvesting? Can you still enter the field to weed, inspect plants and apply inputs? A gap between young plants is not necessarily wasted land. It may be space those plants need as they develop. Filling every gap with another crop can create overcrowding later. Use a row or strip arrangement suited to the combination, with spacing based on local recommendations. Avoid planting both crops at their full sole crop populations without evidence that the arrangement works under your conditions. Planting time matters too. A rapidly growing crop can dominate one established later. In suitable combinations, an earlier harvest can free space and light for the remaining crop. Plan this around actual variety maturity and seasonal conditions. Also, do not assume that adding beans means you can stop feeding the other crop. Legumes use much of the nitrogen they fix for their own growth. Their presence does not guarantee enough nitrogen for neighbouring maize or vegetables during that season. Check whether management practices are compatible. A herbicide suitable for maize may damage beans growing beside it. Irrigation, fertilizer placement and crop protection must account for every crop in the field. Finally, measure the result fairly. Record the marketable harvest from each crop, labour, input costs and sales. Compare the mixture with growing the crops separately on the same total land area. One crop yielding less does not automatically mean the intercrop failed, but having two harvests does not automatically mean it succeeded. Start with a small trial before expanding. Which crops are you combining, and what improvement are you expecting from that combination? #HingaWororenaAgronomme

On the sidelines of the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, AFSF joined partners for site visits to SEED Academy and the ForHope campuses to see first-hand the initiatives supporting young people's health and well-being. At SEED Academy, partners and potential investors explored ways to support projects focused on youth mental health, nutrition and development. At the ForHope campus, they learned how the initiative uses philanthropy to raise funds for its projects, mobilising celebrities to help promising initiatives grow. Sessions with the young athletes showed how discipline and nutrition awareness is built into their everyday activities, and why the food they eat matters both on and off the field. These visits mark the kick-off of the pilot projects AFSF is supporting with the Gates Foundation, and the start of partnerships and networks that can open new opportunities for young people's health. Investing in young people’s health today is how we build stronger communities tomorrow, and for young athletes, good nutrition is where performance begins. #AFSF #Dakar2026 #YouthHealth #Nutrition #SportForHealth #OurFoodOurfuture
