"I am so happy that all the people came through to help, because it's going to help the future of the original people that started [the St. John community]." Thelma Williams, "Grandma Wisdom," has lived in Austin's St. John neighborhood her whole life. Here's how a lot that sat empty for nearly 20 years is becoming 201 income- and rent-restricted homes. 🧵

That's the gap our $6.4M investment is helping to close. Short-term rentals aren't permitted in these homes. This is about housing supply, not Airbnb supply.

Does Airbnb cause the housing crisis? It’s the question we get the most, so we put it to @DanielZHornung, who leads Airbnb's Housing Accelerator, and let him answer it in full.

Austin has shown before that the answer to rising rents is building more housing. Construction costs are going up, which is making building harder. Rents are starting to rise again. This is why we launched the Airbnb Housing Accelerator. More supply is the answer, and we’re helping build it. Starting in Austin.
The world is changing fast. Apartment rents in Austin are rising again (barely) for the first time since early 2023. Austin was the poster child for the apartment supply boom, pushing down rents for 41 straight months. But construction has rapidly tapered off, vacancies are gradually leasing up, and rents are starting to tick back upward. Not a boom (yet?), but an inflection point.

Rent is eating people's paychecks. Owning a home feels out of reach. The main reason isn't complicated: the U.S. is millions of homes short. We asked @DanielZHornung, who leads the Airbnb Housing Accelerator: why believe a travel company can help solve the housing crisis?

We launched the Airbnb Housing Accelerator last week, with an investment in an Austin housing development. Now, we are donating $1M to pass Prop 1, CA's housing bond measure. Building housing requires better policy & more investment: we're pushing for both news.airbnb.com/airbnb-contr…

In 2024, the median small farm lost roughly ~$2,800. Last year, the typical farm stay host on Airbnb earned ~$8,000. That gap is why we're partnering with American Farmland Trust to offer farmers up to $10,000 to start or expand a farm stay. foxnews.com/travel/farmers-o…

Rent is eating people’s paychecks and owning a home feels out of reach. The biggest driver is decades of underbuilding. The U.S. is short at least 5 million homes.

We asked @DanielZHornung, who leads our Housing Accelerator, why a travel company is putting $250M into building homes. First project: 201 income-restricted homes in Austin, no short-term rentals allowed.
