Tesla Roadster Patent Reveals an Active Rear Wing
Days ahead of the second-generation Roadster's debut, a newly published filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office details an active rear wing that generates downforce, cuts drag, or retracts when the car anticipates a crash.
Tesla plans to reveal the long-delayed Roadster at SpaceX's Texas test facility on October 1. The car has been closing in on a decade since it first appeared as a prototype, and the patent offers a concrete detail amid the specifications and pricing that remain unknown.
The filing describes a wing that sits flush with the bodywork when not in use. From there it can deploy to deliver maximum downforce, tilt to cut drag in some situations, and retract entirely if an impact is imminent. Where a speed-deployable spoiler manages airflow, this device functions as a wing, generating downforce for added grip in the manner of the unit on a Porsche 911 GT3.
The patent indicates the wing ties into the vehicle's automated driver-assist software, set to react quickly when a collision is predicted. That makes the system more complex than the speed-deployable spoiler on a standard 911. Depending on how the software is programmed, the wing could supply grip-generating downforce or a low-drag setting according to how the car is being driven.
Two caveats accompany the reveal. The drawings that accompany the filing seem to depict the wing mounted on a two-door coupe instead of the targa roof layout projected for the Roadster. There is also no guarantee the technology will debut on the current car.
Much of the conjecture around the Roadster has centered on a rumored SpaceX package, which could in theory involve some form of compressed-gas thruster system.
Whether the Roadster arrives with any of that hardware remains to be seen. The patent confirms only that an active aerodynamic wing is among the designs Tesla has protected, and that it is capable of shifting between downforce and low-drag modes on the move.
