Thousands protested in Budapest today against the Hungarian government's plan to shut down the Terror House Museum.
In over 20 years it had more than 8 million visitors, Hungarians and foreigners alike, showing them the horrors of the Hungarian nazi and communist regimes, showcasing the horrible crimes, the perpetrators and also the heros who dared to fight back.
Last week the government fired the entire management for political reasons and gave no explanation for the abrupt shutdown. When the demonstration was announced, they backtracked, promised to reopen but revise the exhibition. The management stayed fired nonetheless.
We don't want history to repeat itself, nor to forget the crimes, the criminals. And we absolutely don't want 21st century new communists to rewrite our history.
The new government likes to pretend they share conservative values.
Their attempt to shut down the museum is telling of the values they represent.
