Ten years exactly from Bengoa launch There were 14 recommendations I’m not sure we have meaningfully achieved any of these 14!! All burning platform predictions have come very, very true….

* ten years today!!!
Exactly a year today @SJAMcBride for the launch, every prediction has come true and service hasn’t changed. Nowhere more obvious than GP to be so fundamental to new model, to prevention and proactive care and to shift to out of hospital care, but has instead been decimated

A decade ago today, Prof Rafael Bengoa delivered his seminal health report; much has been ignored. 📉Then, 226,000 people were waiting for outpatient treatment; now 527,000 are. 🔻Then, 67% of patients referred for urgent cancer treatment got started in 62 days; now just 28% do.

Northern Ireland's collapsing health service is a scandal; Stormont knew this would happen - and has allowed it. Vast sums have been paid to temporary staff to prop up a system MLAs admitted a decade ago was unsustainable. Now even that isn’t working. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunda…

This is really difficult. A huge amount of unmet need and lag in diagnosis due to lack of service. For medication and for shared care, GPs need someone to share the care with…..
Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are demanding urgent action over a lack of funded services in Northern Ireland, with some revealing they pay thousands of pounds a year for private treatment. bbc.in/4zNM0O7

If our executive collapses it may well signal the complete collapse of our NHS. I can’t imagine the pressure, but well done to @GRobinsonDUP for his resolve and strong leadership in very difficult circumstances
Tonight DUP MP @carlalockhart resigned as a DUP officer, a story first reported by @SuzyJourno DUP party leader @GRobinsonDUP says he's "sorry to see that it has occurred and she remains a key part of our team." #BBCTheView @MarkCarruthers7

Regularly when I share concerns raised with me by healthcare professionals about the upcoming winter pressures I get replies like ‘it happens every year’ or ‘it’s always like this’. See the chart below of 12 hour waits in A&Es since 2008. It is much, much worse now.

Any mention of the crisis facing our health service……
The FM & dFM were at the Executive Office scrutiny committee today. Here’s how the question session ended at 3pm.

Continuity of care is so important to what we need to do…
It was a disastrous mistake in 2004 to scrap family doctors. I tried and failed to bring them back. Will this government do any better?

Extra hand washing in GP today. My hands are now dry and itchy!
Norovirus season is starting Areminder that alcohol gel does very little against it. Wash your hands with soap and water, or prepare to spend a weekend getting to know your bathroom.... 🤮

When we talk about transformation and especially proactive care, this is a very good example. Switching our service to pick up and manage these problems much earlier saves serious illness, saves lives and saves huge amounts of money
Thank-you to @strokeassocni for providing stats about stroke survivors and the prevalence of high blood pressure and AF in the East Antrim area. We need to do more to support stroke survivors and to prevent strokes from happening.

Hospital doctors’ dispute is over pay erosion, not late pay uplifts. Pay erosion has seen pay drop from between 16% - 26% over the past 18 years (depending on what grade / band you’re on) due to below inflation pay awards. Read our full statement bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…
The practical impacts of the NI Executive’s failure to agree a budget have been surprisingly muted. But that’s about to change as doctors & nurses run out of patience on their unimplemented pay awards. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c32l…

Capacity capacity capacity ! A single additional Salaried GP session costs Practice in region of £18/19k when NI / pensions / Indemnity included . As you increase Gp sessions also need Admin support . Small rises in GP funding simply do not move the goalposts to improve CAPACITY

This is exactly right. The drive for fancier queues, fancier access options and unrealistic targets completely bypasses those most in need and where we need to prioritise. It’s always going to be impossible to solve access without capacity
Older adults and people with complex health needs are often the highest users of healthcare, yet they are the least likely to possess smartphones or have high digital confidence. When appointments are claimed rapidly online, less digitally fluent patients are at a disadvantage.

What I see here is mature politics and a clear strategy. If we all get behind it we will unquestionably improve. The 6 key aims are entirely correct. I am very happy to join any panel for any party to discuss and debate this. @SDLPlive are the only others that have asked so far
Alliance won't accept another decade of health service decline. In 2016, Professor Bengoa gave us a blueprint to fix our health service. In 2026 things have only gotten worse. That's why we've written to party leaders to sign a cross-party compact on health transformation.
