I’ve been absolutely obsessed with a question lately. Can AI truly become a master coder? We see LLMs doing amazing things, but competitive programming? That’s a whole different beast. It’s not just about writing code, it’s about that lightning bolt insight, the kind that wins Olympiads. The honest truth, there's still a massive gap. And today, I want to share how our latest project is not just measuring that gap, but efficiently closing it. First, Let's Measure the Real Gap; You can’t improve what you can’t measure. Most coding benchmarks have a huge problem, data contamination. Models might have seen the test problems before during training. So, Sentient an amazing team from NYU, Princeton, UCSD, and others, we built LiveCodeBench Pro. Think of it as the ultimate, unforgiving coding arena. Here’s the gist. The second a contest ends on Codeforces, ICPC, or IOI, grab the problems. This happens before any solutions or tutorials hit the web. Test the heck out of these problems, just like human contestants face during the "hack" phase. Sentient, even built a fuzzer to find every possible edge case. They have actual Olympiad medalists analyze each problem. They tag what makes it hard: is it Knowledge heavy (needing a known algorithm), Logic-heavy (needing step by step deduction), or Observation-heavy (needing a creative "Aha!" moment)? Models are pretty good at applying known templates (Knowledge) and following logical steps (Logic). But their performance collapses on problems that need a novel, creative insight (Observation). This is where the real genius of human programmers shines. Scaling models bigger isn't the only answer. need to teach them smarter. Meet Dobby-CP This is the part I'm most excited about. If we want to teach a smaller, open source model to be a great programmer, how do we do it without a massive, expensive dataset? Learn from a Great Teacher: Sentient, used larger, more powerful models to generate "chain of thought" reasoning their step by step logic for solving a problem. But they didn't just copy it; refined it with human editorial oversight. This "supervised distilled" data turned out to be the best teacher for our smaller models. You wouldn't only do calculus to become a better writer, right? Similarly, they found that training our model on a mix of competitive programming and general reasoning problems (like math puzzles) worked far better than a pure CP diet. Cross training matters! It’s not about having 100 different solutions to the same problem. It's about seeing 100 different problems. Problem diversity is the rocket fuel for performance; more solutions per problem gives diminishing returns. This led they to create Dobby-CP, a family of efficient models (7B and 14B parameters). The crazy part? Sentien trained them on a surprisingly small, high quality dataset (24k examples for the 14B model!). The result? Dobby-CP performs competitively with models trained on 30 times more data and gets close to some closed-source giants. It proves that with the right teaching method, you can achieve elite performance without an elite sized budget. So, are they there yet? Is AI the ultimate coding grandmaster? Not quite. The "observation" gap is real. But I've never been more hopeful. LiveCodeBench Pro gives us a clear, honest scoreboard. And Dobby-CP shows us a path forward one that values a great curriculum and a wise teacher over brute force. We're not just throwing more compute at the problem. They are learning how to teach.
