Increasing Europe's agency in the AGI transition. Chief of Staff @arqfoundation. Europe2031 co-author.

I'm deeply concerned about Europe's future on AI. One of my biggest worries is our erosion of agency, our ability to stay relevant and fight for our values in a future where AI becomes a civilisationally important technology. Myself, @DadaJudith , @bakkermichiel and others have written a scenario to outline a potential future we worry we are on track towards. europe2031.ai/ Every optimistic and realistic path I can see for Europe runs through a central node - one where Europe has more leverage, more importance and more say. One where Europe grows more, builds more where it matters, and takes ownership over its resilience. Europe 2031 is a five-year scenario of the continent's slide into irrelevance: how AI is driving it, and what can still be done. The co-authors are researchers, scientists and investors who have advised European leaders, co-authored national AI strategies, built and funded these systems from the inside. We have no interest in hype and we deeply care about this continent. Europe 2031 ends with five concrete recommendations: - drastically more compute on European soil - an AI middle-power coalition - labour-market reforms - a bold position in robotics and industrial AI - and a positive vision of what AI can do for society. Europe can still change course if it finds the political will and the courage to engage in the most ambitious political and economic agenda the continent has undertaken in peacetime. I encourage you to read it if you have the time:

PSA: in light of recent cyberattacks and vulnerabilities, I recommend everyone: * use a good password manager (1Password) and do not duplicate passwords * use two factor auth for everything important (not via sms!! Google Authenticator or better yet YubiKey) * Auto-updates on, and restart weekly so they actually install * Freeze your credit * Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN * Get your cell carrier to give you a port-out PIN or number lock that makes the carrier refuse to move your number without the PIN You can ask your claude code to audit what on your laptop is out of date and needs updating.

I'm only 2 minutes in and there have already been like 5 gems
New blog post: integer tokenisation, the physics of John Stewart Bell, the Draghi report, Cormac McCarthy's dialogue, the final days of the Qing court, Art Deco in the British Isles, and other things I read or thought about in the last month

we, at @arqfoundation, are working to prevent things like this holding back Europe. If you would like to help us fix CADA, my DMs are open! We will be hiring for multiple roles.
The most tractable action to protect European governments' AI access is to stop the EU's Cloud and AI Development Act. It would create vast legal uncertainty about using the world's best AI systems in both routine and national-security settings. neilobrien.co.uk/p/the-eus-n…

What happens if Europe gets AI wrong? I speak to Alex Petropoulos, @AlexTPet co-author of Europe 2031, about AI sovereignty vs self-sufficiency, Europe’s institutional choices, and what an ordinary Tuesday might look like in 2031. Plus Overwatch. thendobetter.com/arts/2026/1…

Egg vending machines (jajomaty) are becoming more popular in Poland. They have transitioned from a niche curiosity to a common sight in both large cities (like Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław) and smaller towns. The primary driver is the desire for freshness. These machines are usually owned by local farmers, allowing them to sell directly to customers without a middleman. They operate 24/7, which appeals to people who want farm-fresh eggs outside of traditional market or grocery store hours. While older models were simple lockers, newer machines often feature touchscreens and support for contactless payments, fitting well into Poland's highly digitized payment culture.

These days, I'm struck by how the dominant mood on both sides of the Atlantic toward the other is a kind of pity. Europe frets about the US's supposed slide into autocracy; the US about Europe's pusillanimity and immiseration.

Twitter being the everything app means I can post my travel photo-blog here, right?

Barcelona. Such a pretty city. The level of detail and ornamentation in seemingly random streets. The trees breaking up what would be a repetitive and imposing facade from the street-level. Dense, walkable, beautiful. Just great.

Sagrada Família. Forced to choose between life or death, I easily choose life. I expect many would agree. Radicalises against death, so I guess the OG HPMOR?

Im struck by the little details that make the Barcelona metro so pleasant. The time showing to the second, the arrows showing which direction the train is moving in, the comfortable AND beautiful marble seats and station design. It all feels very swiss.

Accidently got off a stop early because I was busy tweeting. So now I get to walk the rest of the way. And just wow. Not even the prettiest neighbourhoods, just a random stroll. Peak Europe....
