When Should Humans Override Chess Engines? Dr, @Alexey_Root, WIM, and her son William sat down with Dr. Jon Edwards — an ICCF GM and the 32nd World Correspondence Chess Champion — to ask him this and other questions at the forefront of engine analysis in correspondence chess. Dr. Edwards is one of many experts who will be speaking this weekend at the 2026 Saint Louis Chess Conference, presented by US Chess, @STLChessClub, and @Kasparov_Chess new.uschess.org/news/when-sh…

-PRESS RELEASE- DRAMA TO THE FINAL MOVE: WESLEY SO AND RACHAEL LI CLAIM U.S. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES SAINT LOUIS (Oct. 23, 2026) — The U.S. Chess Championships delivered a wild ride from start to finish, with high drama, hard-fought battles and championship dreams on the line in both divisions. In the Open, Grandmaster (GM) Fabiano Caruana and GM Wesley So battled their way into a playoff to decide the title, with So ultimately emerging as champion and taking home $56,000 – marking So’s fourth title. The U.S. Women’s Championship was equally action-packed, as 16-year-old rookie Woman International Master (WIM) Rachael Li of Plano, Texas, made a spectacular debut, claiming her first U.S. Women’s Championship title and $45,000 in prize money. Hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club (STLCC), the 2026 U.S. Chess Championship events featured 24 of the top chess players who competed over the board from Oct. 9–22 for a total prize fund of more than $400,000. Fred Das and Jeroen Terlingen, authors of The Sponsor: Murder at the North Sea Chess Tournament, teamed up again for The Sponsor Part II: The Marostica Chess Festival Under Attack. The first Sponsor book was published in 2024 and the second was published in 2026. I hope for a third Sponsor book in 2028. Read the review: sparkchess.com/the-sponsor-r… / @NewInChess @STLChessClub

Retired 2600 survives another day. Ended up winning the 1st Azeri Chess Academy Open. Thanks, Ulvi, for the invite! This was a way stronger event than I expected. Kudos for bringing together so many strong players. Happy to play in his first event and support him as he continues his organizing journey.
Plan: support a friend, have a vacation, maybe sweat in 1-2 games. Starting list: 9 GMs, 5 IMs. Full of hungry young players. Boy, as a retired 2600, I did not know what I signed up for... 1st Azeri Chess Academy Open starts in a week. Need to study some chess. Any speedrun warm-up suggestions?

I think in the modern times it should still be allowed to write and publish chess books, but they really have to be good. For example, like this one.

From the Final Four of College Chess to the U.S. Senior Championship, enjoy @Alexey_Root's article charting GM Alexander Onischuk's career!
In 2004 and 2005, the President’s Cup, aka the Final Four of College Chess, was held in Lindsborg, Kansas. Instead of trophies, the teams received Dala horses. More than 20 years later, participant GM Alexander Onischuk is the highest-rated player (aged 50 years and older), according to @USChess. Read more: sparkchess.com/dala-horses-a…

Despite strong finishes, #TeamUSAChess came up just short of the podium in both #ChessOlympiad tournaments. Three USA players won individual medals, including IM Alice Lee with an individual gold for her Board 2 performance! USA finished fourth in the Open with a 17/22 score, behind Uzbekistan (20/22), India (18/22), and Germany (18/22). @LevAronian won an individual bronze for his 8/10 score on Board 4. USA Women tied for third with 17/22, behind China (20/22) and Kazakhstan (18/22), but finished fourth on tiebreaks behind India. For individual board prizes, IM Alice Lee won gold with an 8½/10 score on Board 2 and @carissayipchess earned silver for her 8/10 score on Board 1. Photos courtesy @FIDE_chess /Michal Walusza.
