Considering the abundance of reactions for generating cyclohexan(en)ones with precise control of substituents (e.g. a-, b-, and g-functionalization, annulation, and Birch reactions), this new deoxytrifluoromethylation/aromatization strategy

now enables access to a wide spectrum of Ar–CF3 products that are difficult, expensive, and/or impossible to access by current synthetic methods.

In ongoing work, the strategy also enables access other fluoroalkyl groups, and mild conditions for aromatization have already been established that should further improve the scope of accessible Ar–RF products. Stay tuned for future developments.

...and to follow up on the last tweet, here Ryan, Mohammed, and Laura add aliphatic alcohols across difluorinated alkenes under photoredox conditions. In this reaction, an uncommonly exploited diselenide co-catalyst helped avoid elimination of fluoride pubs.rsc.org/en/content/arti…

Notably, the reaction exploits an underutilized aniline-derived co-catalyst to generate the difluorinated product, which contrasts related base-mediated photocatalytic reactions that undergo net C–F functionalization to deliver α-fluorovinylthioethers.
234
Instead, we developed a photocatalytic hydrothiolation of gem-difluoroalkenes that enables access to a broad spectrum of α,α-difluoroalkylthioethers.
192
Most functionalization reactions of gem-difluorinated alkenes proceed through defluorinative functionalization processes that deliver mono-fluorovinyl product, and few reactions undergo net hydrofunctionalization to generate difluorinated products.
