A baby Japanese macaque named PUNCH, the Monkey was abandoned by his mother at Ichikawa City Zoo. Zookeepers gave him the IKEA orangutan plush for comfort, videos showed him hugging and carrying the toy everywhere, which went viral on social media.
Because of the viral videos:
The IKEA orangutan plush sold out in several countries, some resellers listed the toy online for 10× the original price.
The emotional story of the lonely monkey hugging the plush made the toy an internet meme and symbol of comfort/friendship.
Where the name “LUPE” comes from?
