CALL FOR SOLIDARITY
The Defenders Coalition is concerned that 187 protestors arrested arbitrarily on 2 July 2024 while taking part in #RejectFinanceBill2024 and arraigned in court on 3 July 2024 for plea-taking continue to be held in police custody despite the court freeing them on a free bond.
The Police have defied the court order and are holding them across various police stations in Nairobi: Central, Kamukunji and Capitol Hill Police Stations.
It is alleged that the police are frustrating the arrested persons by demanding for bribes to release them.
The 187 persons include minors. Concerning reports are indicative of prolonged detention without provision of food resulting to health issues for some of the detained persons.
Efforts by @HakiKNCHR, @lawsocietykenya and @DefendersKE have borne no fruits!

My friend Yoeal Haile, an American tourist, is still being held at Upper Hill/Capitol Hill police station in Nairobi without charge for the 3rd day now. That’s longer than the law allows.
Kenyan police have refused to release him, allow bail or charge him in court
