THE CALL OF THE FIRST CRUSADE AS DEFENSE AGAINST CENTURIES OF ISLAMIC JIHAD AND CONQUEST The First Crusade was not the start of Christian aggression against Islam. It was a late and imperfect response to four centuries of Islamic military expansion that had already overrun ancient Christian heartlands, imposed dhimmi (subordinate non-Muslim) status on surviving believers, and threatened the survival of the Christian East. THE CRISIS THAT PROMPTED THE CALL By 1095 C.E., the Byzantine Empire faced relentless pressure from the Seljuk Turks, a Muslim power that had seized vast territories in Asia Minor. The Byzantine emperor appealed to the West for military aid because Christian lands were falling and pilgrimage routes to Jerusalem had become dangerous. Jerusalem itself had been under Muslim control since the seventh century, cut off from free Christian access. Eastern Christians endured ongoing subjugation, periodic persecution, and the loss of churches and holy sites long before any Western army marched east. Pope Urban II answered this crisis at the Council of Clermont in 1095 C.E. His call rallied knights and common people to defend fellow believers, secure the holy places, and push back against the advancing Islamic forces. This was not a sudden outburst of religious hatred. It was a mobilization against a threat that had been expanding for generations through the doctrine and practice of jihad (armed struggle to expand Islamic dominion and subjugate non-believers). THE QURANIC FOUNDATION OF THE THREAT Islamic expansion was not driven by secular ambition alone. It flowed from explicit commands in the Quran that remained operative long after the initial conquests. Surah 9:29 directs: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture — [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.” This verse commands warfare against Jews and Christians until they submit and pay the jizyah tax in humiliation. It establishes dominance, not peaceful coexistence, as the goal when Islamic power allows. Surah 8:39 reinforces the pattern: “And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah.” These Medinan verses, revealed after Muhammad gained military power, supplied the religious justification for the rapid conquests that stripped Christianity of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, North Africa, and parts of Europe. The same doctrinal engine continued operating through the Seljuk period and beyond. Devout adherence to these texts produced the aggression that made the 1095 call necessary. BIBLICAL CONTRAST WITH ISLAMIC DOCTRINE Biblical Christianity draws a clear line between the Church’s mission and the civil use of force. Jesus declared, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36) and rebuked Peter for using the sword to advance it (Matthew 26:52). The early church spread through preaching and endurance under persecution, not conquest. Christians are commanded to make disciples of all nations through baptism and teaching, not through military subjugation or special taxes on unbelievers. At the same time, Scripture recognizes the legitimate role of civil authority to restrain evil. Romans 13:4 states that governing authority “does not bear the sword in vain” but serves as “a minister of God, an avenger who carries out wrath on the one who practices evil.” Proverbs 24:11 commands believers not to stand by while the innocent are taken to slaughter. The call to defend Eastern Christians and holy sites had roots in these principles of rescue and just defense, even if medieval execution mixed them with unbiblical ideas of merit and penitential warfare. Islam, from its founding, fused religious mission with political and military domination. Muhammad’s career in Medina turned the community toward armed expansion and rule over non-Muslims. That model, codified in the Quran, produced centuries of offensive jihad that turned Christian-majority regions into Islamic territories. The contrast is not between two identical religions but between a faith whose founder rejected the sword for kingdom advancement and one whose founder and scriptures commanded its use for supremacy. THE REAL-WORLD IMPLICATIONS OF THE CALL The 1095 response exposed the cost of ignoring prior aggression. By the time Western Christendom acted, much of the Christian East had already been lost or reduced to second-class status under Islamic rule. Pilgrims faced extortion and violence. Ancient centers of Christian life had been transformed through conquest followed by the slow pressure of dhimmi restrictions and conversion incentives. Modern attempts to paint the Crusades as the original sin of Christian-Islamic conflict erase this chronology on purpose. They invert aggressor and defender to serve contemporary narratives. The call at Clermont was a recognition that passive endurance had reached its limit against a doctrinal system committed to expansion wherever strength permitted. Flaws in execution and medieval theology do not erase the legitimacy of responding to real threats rooted in Quranic commands. Centuries of jihad had already reshaped the map before 1095 C.E. The First Crusade represented an attempt to push back against that ongoing reality, not to initiate it. Honest reckoning with this history requires rejecting selective memory that condemns Christian defense while excusing or ignoring the Islamic offensive that made defense necessary.
